Key Responsibilities
- Welcome patients by verifying test requisitions, confirming patient details, and entering information into the database. Generate and attach labels with essential patient data and clarify specimen collection procedures.
- Collect blood samples from patients through methods such as venipuncture and skin puncture, ensuring proper labeling and disposal of sharps.
- Prepare samples for analysis by verifying identification and requisition details, determining additional testing needs, and processing specimens through centrifugation and blood film preparation.
- Manage specimen processing by receiving, sorting, labeling, and logging data into the laboratory information system, while adhering to storage protocols.
- Coordinate the dispatch of specimens to referral laboratories, ensuring accurate logging and compliant packaging.
- Perform reception duties, including answering calls, addressing inquiries from patients and healthcare staff, and relaying messages and test results.
- Generate necessary documentation such as labels and reports, and ensure proper distribution to medical personnel.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment by regularly sanitizing equipment and identifying inventory needs.
- Schedule patient appointments using a computerized system, ensuring efficient management of time and resources.
- Conduct ECG tests by preparing patients and generating reports for medical staff as required.
- Undertake additional related tasks as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills
To be successful in this role, you should possess:
- A high school diploma, completion of a recognized Lab Assistant training program, and relevant experience, or a combination of education and experience.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Effective interpersonal skills to interact with patients and colleagues.
- The physical capability to perform job-related tasks.
- Organizational skills to manage workload efficiently.
- Proficiency in operating laboratory equipment and data entry.
- A commitment to fostering an inclusive environment and understanding the importance of cultural safety.
