Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical, administrative, and educational support to laboratory personnel and other departments.
  • Contribute to the research aims of the Biorepository Services Tissue Retrieval Shared Resource, as outlined by relevant funding grants.
  • Serve as the primary individual responsible for gross examination of surgical human tissue samples to fulfill the research objectives.
  • Engage in active consultation with pathologists, balancing research requirements with the diagnostic potential of specimens, ensuring adequate tissue availability for patient diagnosis.
  • Organize and maintain the accuracy of data within the tissue retrieval database.
  • Secure and anonymize pathology reports for all retrieved tissue samples.
  • Coordinate the collection of tissue samples for the biobank, guiding technicians in collection, data entry, and labeling processes.
  • Perform frozen sectioning of tissue samples for immediate diagnostic purposes.
  • Collaborate with principal investigators and study coordinators to devise and execute plans for tissue sample retrieval for specific research initiatives.
  • Stay informed about all active research protocols that necessitate the retrieval of human tissue samples, applying relevant information in daily operations.
  • Oversee quality assurance of tissue retrieval samples in collaboration with certified pathologists.
  • Identify and track surgical specimens requiring specialized preparation before dispatch to external laboratories.
  • Develop and implement training programs for pathology residents and provide demonstrations for medical and professional students.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and standards related to surgical pathology and tissue retrieval services.
  • Update and maintain pathology grossing manuals as necessary.
  • Continuously seek new products, techniques, and suggestions to enhance safety, efficiency, and quality in laboratory practices.
  • Assist in organizing pathology conferences and educational sessions by preparing necessary specimens and materials.
  • Promote and enforce laboratory safety protocols, including infection control and appropriate safety attire.
  • Exemplify corporate integrity, customer service, and quality improvement.

Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree or equivalent in a scientific field is required.
  • A minimum of three years of relevant experience or graduation from an accredited Pathologists' Assistants program.
  • Proficiency in database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Office Suite is essential.
  • Ability to meet all regulatory requirements pertinent to the role.
