Position Overview:

Join the Kitchener children's program team – where enjoyment and camaraderie flourish. The City of Kitchener seeks imaginative and dynamic leaders eager to assist in delivering after-school activities for children aged 4–13.

Under the guidance of the children's services coordinator, you will help facilitate and engage in program activities that allow children to learn, develop, and have fun through various activities such as arts and crafts, sports, dance, and more.

We are looking for leaders who:
  • Have experience working or volunteering with school-aged children in group environments (e.g., camps, scouting, daycare, coaching) OR have demonstrated leadership capabilities in school or work settings.
  • Are prepared to take on a leadership role in providing quality programs for children.
  • Are passionate about creating enjoyable experiences for children.
  • Are lively, engaging, and willing to embrace fun and creativity.
  • Exhibit responsibility, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
  • Possess excellent relationship-building, communication, and problem-solving skills, understanding the importance of teamwork and commitment.
  • Remain patient and composed under pressure when interacting with children.

Positions for Children's Program Leaders are available at various community centers throughout Kitchener.

Anticipated Employment Dates:
  • Training: In-person and online training is mandatory prior to the commencement of programs.
  • Programs begin the week following training.
Hours per week:

Part-time: 0–24 hours

Hours of work:

Weekdays after 3:00 PM / weekends from 8:45 AM – 5:30 PM, depending on the shift and location.

Additional Information:
  • Work will involve various outdoor conditions and active play.
Responsibilities:
  • Actively engage in fostering a high-energy team environment, ensuring effective collaboration and communication among all team members.
  • Bring enthusiasm and energy daily to deliver fun and innovative programs.
  • Represent the City of Kitchener by providing quality programming and exceptional customer service.
  • Model positive behaviors for participants, including teamwork, responsibility, and initiative.
  • Adhere to program plans, making necessary adjustments to accommodate the abilities and needs of participants.
  • Supervise program participants at all times, ensuring their inclusion and safety.
  • Maintain the safety and cleanliness of the program area and equipment.
  • Support participants in their efforts to engage in new activities and develop new skills.
  • Exercise sound judgment and respond professionally to resolve conflicts and issues.
  • Communicate positively and clearly with peers, supervisors, program participants, and parents.
  • Assist with emergency procedures and provide first aid as needed.
  • Support Inclusion Support Workers and personal support workers in accommodating children with special needs.
  • Assist senior staff in completing records and reports, including attendance and safety checklists.
  • Guide and monitor the activities of volunteers.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • Minimum education level – partial completion of secondary school education (or equivalent).
  • Prior experience working or volunteering with school-aged children in group settings (minimum of 1 month).
  • Minimum age requirement – must be at least 15 years of age or older by the first day of employment.
  • Valid CPR Level 'C' and Standard First Aid Certificate.
  • Ability to provide a satisfactory Police Reference Check (Vulnerable Sector) upon conditional offer.
  • Reliable transportation to work location.
  • Depending on the program's focus, some applicants must have knowledge of or interest in arts, sports, environmental, cultural, or STEM education.
  • Knowledge of or interest in program implementation suitable for children ages 4–13.
  • Dependable with a positive attitude and strong employment record.
