This role encompasses a variety of responsibilities including instructional assistance, community engagement, facility management, financial oversight, and sales operations.
Instructional Assistance for Program Activities:
- Ensure tools and equipment are well-maintained and operational for departmental activities.
- Foster a secure learning atmosphere by implementing safety protocols and conducting inspections.
- Demonstrate and oversee the proper use of tools and equipment.
- Support the instructional team in delivering the program curriculum effectively.
- Guide and supervise student activities, providing feedback on student conduct.
- Serve as the primary first aid responder on-site.
- Collaborate with faculty regarding classroom and laboratory resources.
- Plan and procure necessary supplies and tools for the program.
- Source, price, order, and ensure timely delivery of materials and equipment.
- Maintain adequate stock levels of supplies for both student and faculty use.
- Assist with field trips, which may involve fee collection, travel arrangements, and bus driving as required.
- Engage in departmental meetings and institutional committees.
Community Engagement:
- Provide professional reception services to students and the public, both in-person and via phone.
- Coordinate facility usage by external groups.
- Participate in student recruitment efforts by welcoming applicants and directing them to the program chair.
- Collaborate with faculty to enhance program marketing, conduct facility tours, and participate in promotional events.
- Assist in building and maintaining industry connections to facilitate student employment opportunities.
- Support events at the G.R. Paine Center, including meetings, workshops, and celebrations.
- Engage in professional development activities relevant to the field.
Facility Management:
- Monitor greenhouse conditions, troubleshoot system alerts, and coordinate necessary repairs.
- Implement pest control strategies in collaboration with faculty and students.
- Oversee the upkeep of all program equipment, growing facilities, and the surrounding landscape.
- Communicate with facility services to address maintenance needs such as janitorial services, plumbing, electrical, and heating issues.
- Organize waste management and recycling services.
- Order drinking and irrigation water as needed.
- Collaborate with health and safety officials to report incidents.
- Monitor security protocols, including key management and access controls.
Financial Oversight and Sales:
- Manage the sale of crops and products produced by students, including payment processing and record-keeping.
- Supervise student involvement in marketing and sales as part of their educational experience.
- Establish and maintain organized filing systems.
- Handle financial transactions and reconciliations using institutional systems.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Update and maintain the administrative area, faculty, or department website to ensure current and accurate information.
Required Qualifications:
Must possess a Red Seal Horticulturalist certification or a Diploma in Horticulture, along with a minimum of five years of relevant experience. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- Provincial Pesticide Applicators License.
- First Aid Certification, Level One.
- Experience in landscape maintenance and installation.
- Proven experience in greenhouse management.
- Proficient in the use of common landscaping tools and machinery.
- Relevant work experience in horticulture, preferably in a supervisory capacity.
- Valid BC Driver's License with a clean driving record.
- Must be physically capable of performing moderate to heavy physical tasks.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Class 4 Driver's License.
