Key Responsibilities
  • Investigations and Decision-Making: Conduct thorough investigations into complaints against CBC/Radio-Canada's Journalistic Standards and Practices, making informed decisions that uphold the highest standards of journalism.
  • Policy Development and Advice: Identify major policy concerns and provide expert advice to CBC management and journalists, ensuring that the organization's policies and procedures align with the highest standards of journalism.
  • Communication and Stakeholder Engagement: Effectively communicate the results of investigations to listeners, viewers, and web users, ensuring that all stakeholders are informed and engaged.
  • Consultations and Referrals: Respond to consultations and referrals as necessary, providing expert guidance and support to CBC staff and management.
  • Public Education and Awareness: Assist audience members in interpreting the Corporation's Journalistic Standards and Practices, providing clear and concise information to promote public understanding and awareness.
  • Confidentiality and Independence: Maintain confidentiality and independence in all investigations and decision-making, ensuring that the Ombudsman's role is free from bias and influence.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Experience and Expertise: Recognized and extensive experience as a journalist, with a strong understanding of journalistic standards and practices.
  • Credibility and Integrity: Demonstrated credibility and integrity with the Corporation's journalists, the wider journalistic community, and the public.
  • Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex information to diverse stakeholders.
  • Education and Training: A Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant field, with ongoing training and professional development to stay up-to-date with the latest journalistic standards and practices.
