This is a pivotal role for visionary and results-oriented professionals to spearhead the Accounting Policy & Auditor Independence division at one of Canada's foremost financial institutions. As the Senior Director of Accounting Policy & Auditor Independence, you will serve as a strategic figure within enterprise finance, offering valuable accounting guidance and insights that harmonize business facilitation with a robust governance framework. You will lead your team in managing quarterly financial disclosures and addressing intricate accounting issues, responding to emerging developments, ensuring strong governance over auditor independence, and influencing accounting and disclosure standards through advocacy initiatives. Your exceptional communication skills will be essential in presenting materials to the Audit Committee. This role also allows for a dynamic approach, enabling you to adapt and evolve the position to meet current priorities.
Located within the Chief Accountant's Group at our Toronto headquarters, you will engage in a collaborative team environment that encourages personal excellence, progressive thinking, and collective achievement.
Key Responsibilities
- Guide a team of professionals in delivering expert accounting advice on complex matters to internal stakeholders across RBC.
- Analyze intricate accounting transactions and policy evaluations for complex accounting issues.
- Oversee critical components of our quarterly external reporting process, including financial statements, in close collaboration with other areas of the Chief Accountant's Group.
- Prepare Audit Committee materials for senior finance leaders that effectively convey the RBC narrative through a commercial lens, emphasizing key judgment areas and the finance function's role.
- Act as a catalyst for process improvements by leveraging your unique insights to set ambitious objectives and challenge existing norms while fostering strong partnerships.
- Advance the transformation of the Auditor Independence function to enhance efficiency while managing risk, including reimagining stakeholder engagement strategies.
- Lead the organization in evaluating and responding to new accounting standards affecting RBC, ensuring comprehensive communication and documentation of impacts across business units and senior finance leaders.
- Influence future accounting and disclosure standards by spearheading advocacy efforts on accounting-related matters, including providing feedback on new Discussion Papers or Exposure Drafts from regulatory bodies.
- Establish and nurture strong relationships with stakeholders throughout the organization.
- Articulate key accounting and disclosure issues to senior leaders at RBC with a commercial perspective.
- Engage with industry peers on accounting topics as necessary through professional associations.
- Collaborate with RBC's external and internal auditors on financial accounting and reporting matters as required.
Qualifications
Essential Requirements
- Chartered Professional Accountant designation.
- Over 10 years of relevant professional experience.
- Extensive knowledge of IFRS and U.S. GAAP (familiarity with current U.S. GAAP is preferred).
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, particularly in conveying information to executives.
- Strong leadership and team management capabilities, with a focus on empowering team members.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Proactive and forward-thinking mindset.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, particularly in facilitating collaboration and driving change.
