Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Ubisoft Full time

About the Role

The 3D Animation Specialist will collaborate with the Art Director and Lead Animator to create high-quality animations that meet the project's needs. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated animator with excellent communication skills and a passion for creating engaging in-game animations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain a high level of animation quality while working within design constraints and balancing performance issues.
  • Create full-body and facial animations for use in both in-game and cinematics.
  • Assist with character and rig development, as well as working in engine to make characters and objects game-ready.
  • Participate in the refinement of animation tools and production pipeline.
  • Set the standard for less-experienced animators.
  • Regularly communicate with production regarding animation tasks and timelines.
  • Participate in group planning of animation tasks with other departments (code, design, art, etc.) for deadlines called Sprints every 1-2 weeks.
  • Chart the progress of animation tasks for the producer.
  • Collaborate with all departments and team members, such as Technical Artists, regarding exporting and in-house tools, if necessary.

Autonomy and Creativity

The 3D Animation Specialist will have the freedom to complete animation tasks in the order that benefits themselves and the team. They will balance their own creativity and ideas with the documented vision of the game and genre expectations. Larger animation tasks (e.g., cut scenes) will require concepting and approval by the Art Director before polishing and should be done as early as possible. The Specialist will liaise with design to meet their requirements and ensure animation assets are exploited to best effect.

Requirements

  • 3 years minimum of experience as an animator in the video game or related industry.
  • Strong understanding of traditional animation principles, methods, techniques, and pipeline procedures, as well as a strong understanding of human anatomy and the physics of human motion.
  • Strong organizational skills that translate into successful and timely deliverables.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and spoken. Able to collaborate with team members of different disciplines to improve tools. Proactive in solving problems.
  • Knowledge of character rigging, skinning, and weighting.
  • Traditional art background advantageous.
  • VFX experience advantageous.

Bonus Experience

  • Experience working within a Live Operated game.
  • Experience with Confluence and/or JIRA workflows.
