About the Role
The University Health Network is seeking a highly skilled Pathologist's Assistant to join our Laboratory Medicine Program. As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in supporting the diagnosis and treatment of patients by assisting pathologists in the examination of tissue specimens.
Key Responsibilities
- Describe and dictate the findings of specimens during grossing procedures
- Photograph specimens for documentation and record-keeping purposes
- Utilize knowledge of medical-legal policies and protocols for specimen handling, autopsy, and patient privacy
- Participate in quality management activities and adhere to established safe practices to promote a safe working environment
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) with advanced level courses in anatomy and physiology
- Experience in surgical pathology specimen grossing required
- Graduate of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) PA training program preferred
- Current Certification in Clinical Pathology (CCCPA) and/or American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification or ability to become certified required
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology with special emphasis on the anatomical presentation of disease
- Strong observational skills and exceptional attention to detail
- Ability to work effectively in a multi-functional group that includes medical personnel, other pathology assistants, medical laboratory technicians, lab assistants, and clerical staff
- Working knowledge of standard safety precautions and good laboratory hygiene
- Working knowledge of safe chemical handling, storage protocols, and emergency spill procedures
- Working knowledge of safe operation of hand or electrically driven saws
- Practical use of digital photography
- Experience with tissue sampling for the purpose of frozen section examination
- Computer literacy in Windows-based applications
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, problem recognition, and problem-solving skills
- Good interpersonal and analytical skills
- Ability to work independently under minimal supervision
- Ability to work effectively as a team member
