Job Summary:

Vancouver Island University is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Tool Crib Specialist/Instructional Equipment Assistant to join our team. This is a critical role that requires a strong background in tool maintenance, repair, and management, as well as excellent instructional support skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain, issue, and receive tools, equipment, and supplies to students and instructors.
  • Assist instructors in regards to student usage of specialized tools and equipment.
  • Repair and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Troubleshoot, assess, and correct equipment problems arising in the welding area.
  • Determine requirements and maintain an uninterrupted supply of materials and consumables.
  • Prepare specialized welding equipment for a variety of processes to be used for teaching purposes.
  • Instructional support including equipment/process preparation and moving of equipment.
  • Ensure processes and procedures are followed as per industry norm and curriculum.
  • Meet with suppliers and manufacturers' representatives to obtain specifications and prices on equipment and supplies.
  • Repair welding equipment for all the Trades & Applied Technology Departments.
  • Provide excellent customer service and support to students, instructors, and staff.

Requirements:

  • Level 3 (Level B), or equivalent, certification.
  • Seven years or more recent relevant experience.
  • A good knowledge of the welding trade, supply, and equipment requirements and operation of machine tools.
  • Knowledge of the electrical field together with the care and use of a broad range of hand tools.
  • Knowledge and skill to repair grinders, drills, saws, and other electrical tools as well as all the welding equipment in the shop.
  • Understanding and sensitivity to the adult learner.
  • Must successfully complete the Vancouver Island University forklift operators training program within 2 months.
  • Working knowledge of WHMIS regulations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer applications appropriate to Tool Room operation and inventory.
  • Good interpersonal skills in dealing with students, instructors, and suppliers.
  • Valid OFA Level 2 Certificate required (or obtain as per CUPE Article 23.03 c).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Interprovincial Red Seal Certification.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and have a confirmed satisfactory driving record.
