Durham College is in search of a dedicated and skilled educator who is passionate about fostering quality education and supporting student achievement. The Faculty of Liberal Studies is looking for a part-time instructor to deliver Communications Courses in-person at the Oshawa or Whitby campus. This is an ongoing opportunity for future part-time teaching roles.
The primary responsibility of the selected candidate will be to facilitate Communication Foundations courses. These courses are designed to assist students in developing and honing the essential skills and competencies required for effective communication across various contexts within their academic disciplines. Topics may encompass communication theories, interpersonal relationship models, group dynamics, public speaking, and intercultural communication.
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR PART-TIME FACULTY APPLICANTS:Recruitment for part-time positions is continuous and is influenced by the scheduling of courses and the demand for faculty. Part-time faculty members typically teach up to 6 hours weekly, with flexible schedules available Monday through Thursday from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm and Fridays from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.
Key Responsibilities of Part-time Professors at Durham College:- Fostering an inclusive learning environment that respects and accommodates the diverse cultural and educational backgrounds of students;
- Employing adult education principles to actively engage students in their learning journey;
- Effectively utilizing educational technologies to enhance learning, manage grades, and deliver hybrid and online courses;
- Designing curriculum that incorporates suitable strategies and tools for assessing student learning;
- Ensuring that course and program content remains current and relevant;
- Demonstrating initiative and the ability to work independently;
- Collaborating effectively with students, program teams, and various internal and external stakeholders.
- A relevant Master's degree (a PhD in a related field is advantageous). Professional designations are also beneficial.
- A minimum of five years of recent and pertinent work experience.
- Experience teaching at the post-secondary level, with a solid understanding and application of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and contemporary assessment methodologies. TESOL Certification and experience with English as an Additional Language (EAL) learners are assets.
- Experience in industry-led or community-based applied research is a plus.
- A strong commitment to prioritizing the student experience.
- Proficiency in using current technologies to support student learning and manage grades effectively.
- A proven history of lifelong learning.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders, including students, faculty, support staff, administrators, and community partners.
- Familiarity with the Ontario college system.
