Role Summary:

The Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) Social Services Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting EDS Specialists and the Divisional Director of EDS in executing the local Emergency Disaster Services program, adhering to divisional and territorial guidelines.

This position is a temporary contract for a defined period, requiring eligibility for Canada Summer Jobs, with a commitment of 35 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Service Duties:
  2. Collaborate with EDS Specialists and the Divisional Director to deliver 24/7 Emergency Disaster Services in response to situational needs.
  3. Assist in organizing and facilitating training sessions within the designated area.
  4. Support EDS Specialists and the Divisional Director in providing clients with pastoral care, emotional support, and necessary referrals.
  5. Help ensure clients receive immediate assistance for their basic needs, including food, water, and clothing.
  6. Maintain readiness of all vehicles and equipment assigned to the EDS program.
  7. Ensure proper maintenance of service units by designated operators of EDS vehicles.
  8. Contribute to the development of response strategies, including preparing EDS manuals and relevant materials.
  9. May supervise volunteers during deployments as directed by the Incident Commander.
  10. Perform additional duties as required.

Organizational Responsibilities:

  1. Understand and embody the Mission of The Salvation Army in relation to job responsibilities.
  2. Maintain confidentiality as required.
  3. Actively participate as a responsible team member.
  4. Represent the organization professionally and assist others in developing similar skills.
  5. Engage in regular performance evaluations and supervision.
  6. Comply with health and safety regulations and The Salvation Army's policies.
  7. Complete ongoing training and certification in all aspects of EDS.
  8. Handle The Salvation Army's property with care.
  9. Engage in continuous professional development and training.
  10. Perform other related duties as needed.

Accounting Responsibilities:

  1. Assist with processing invoices, receipts, and vehicle charges as needed.
  2. Help manage the receipt and control of gift cards.
  3. Provide support for photocopying, scanning, data entry, and other financial tasks.
  4. Perform additional accounting duties as required.

Administrative Duties:

  1. Answer phone calls and respond to general inquiries.
  2. Manage incoming and outgoing mail, including confidential materials.
  3. Assist in maintaining fixed asset and supply inventories.
  4. Support the recruitment and onboarding of EDS volunteers.
  5. Help complete and submit reports and statistics as per EDS standards.
  6. Perform other administrative duties as required.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • A valid Driver's License is preferred; a clean driving record is necessary for driving work vehicles.
  • A satisfactory Criminal Background Check is required.

Experience and Skills:

  • At least one year of relevant experience, including familiarity with office equipment.

Preferred Skills:

  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to perform tasks safely and efficiently, including lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Experience working in high-pressure environments.
  • Integrity and confidentiality with a balanced approach to fairness.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Strong organizational and administrative capabilities.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and databases.
  • Willingness to adhere to The Salvation Army's policies and wear branded attire.
