Job Title: Senior Vice President, Corporate Development

As a key member of the Markel team, you will play a critical role in driving the company's growth and profitability. The Senior Vice President, Corporate Development will be responsible for developing and executing the division's underwriting strategy, ensuring the delivery of profitable underwriting results, and managing the portfolio to achieve business goals.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Underwriting Performance:
    • Manage the portfolio to achieve business and profitability goals.
    • Address social, economic, and environmental factors that impact the book.
    • Utilize pricing capability and resources to drive insight, performance, and better outcomes.
    • Ensure the delivery of Portfolio Performance and Combined Ratio reviews.
    • Act as the highest referral point for underwriting risks in Canada.
    • Sponsor referrals to the wider Markel business units.
  • Enterprise Leadership:
    • Develop and communicate divisional underwriting strategy, including risk appetite, limit deployment, aggregation, pricing, exposure change/inflation, key terms and conditions, and their translation into activities.
    • Monitor the insurance marketplace and identify underwriting opportunities, threats, and emerging risks.
  • Product Development:
    • Manage and coordinate product development/material change in risk process.
    • Manage technical product teams.
    • Act as the Risk Officer for the Canadian division.
    • Ensure DA processes and procedures are appropriate in line with international standards.
Requirements:
  • Deep understanding of the Canadian insurance market dynamics, trends, and regulatory landscape.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic vision and direction of the book.
  • Strong reputation in the Canadian market with established long-term partnerships with senior c-suite brokers.

  • Ability to recruit, develop, and retain top talent within the region, fostering a high-performance culture and a robust talent pipeline.
