Laboratory Technician, Pre-Analytical Support

Key Responsibilities

  • Gather blood and various specimens, ensuring proper labeling with pertinent details in accordance with established health policies. This includes conducting sweat and breath collections, as well as obtaining capillary gases and both venous and capillary blood samples, along with other necessary specimens. Provide clerical assistance during fine needle aspiration collections.
  • Prepare specimens for laboratory analysis through processes such as centrifugation, aliquoting, and prioritizing distribution of specimens, including those for Microbiology, Pathology, and Cytology, while assisting with gross examinations and preparing slides through staining and labeling.
  • Execute clerical tasks as needed, including data entry for patient records and test results. Communicate findings to designated personnel and address inquiries from other healthcare team members.
  • Maintain and operate laboratory equipment, performing routine checks on temperature-sensitive devices such as refrigerators, incubators, autoclaves, and water baths. Report any equipment issues to the appropriate staff following established protocols.
  • Prepare reagents, media, and materials for specimen collection, ensuring proper distribution. Manage the receipt, storage, and shipping of specimens and other materials, including the preparation and transport of specimens for both pre-analytical and post-analytical processes, while discarding specimens according to accepted guidelines.
  • Load specimens for analysis onto automated and semi-automated equipment equipped with barcode technology.
  • Conduct laboratory tests, including urine dipstick and glucose assessments using urinalysis machines and glucose meters. Perform basic tests such as occult blood and pregnancy tests, and plate microbiology specimens.
  • Ensure a clean and safe working environment by adhering to established policies and procedures, including maintaining adequate supplies at workstations.
  • Assist with inventory management by counting supplies and notifying relevant staff regarding inventory levels as per established procedures.
  • Schedule and coordinate appointments, entering and verifying patient registration details as necessary.
  • Provide support by performing ECG tests, attaching electrodes to patients, and operating the equipment in accordance with standard procedures.
  • Undertake additional related tasks as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Completion of Grade 12, along with a recognized Laboratory Assistant training program and a minimum of one year of recent, relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Ability to interact effectively with others.
  • Physical capability to perform the duties associated with the position.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Competence in operating relevant equipment.
  • Proficient keyboarding skills.
  • Commitment to understanding legislative obligations and provincial commitments as outlined in foundational documents, including the Truth & Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
  • Dedication to fostering meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per the TRC and provincial commitments.
  • Knowledge of the socio-economic, political, and historical contexts affecting Indigenous Peoples, along with familiarity in addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism and cultural safety initiatives.
