Job Summary

We are seeking a Casual Health Care Worker II, Inpatient Unit to join our team in Burnaby, B.C. The successful candidate will provide day-to-day care to patients, participate in group activities, and assist with maintaining a safe environment.

Responsibilities
  • Attend to the day-to-day care of patients by supervising and assisting with meals, escorting and supervising meals at the patients' dining room, and assisting patients with general care such as bathing, dressing, feeding, and personal hygiene.
  • Perform routine nursing procedures such as weighing patients, taking temperatures, pulse, respiration, blood pressures, and measuring intake and output; record data on flow sheets.
  • Observe and report changes in condition or behavior of patients; record on patients' clinical records as directed by the Coordinator; fill out forms in regards to patients' behavior as required; monitor patients on the unit.
  • Assist with admission and discharge procedures.
  • Accompany and assist the lab technician with medical procedures; collect stool and urine samples.
  • Participate in the rehabilitation, remotivation, and self-care programs by being aware of patients' nursing care plan and stated treatment goals; model appropriate behavior and teach simple social skills; escort and supervise gym groups, arts and crafts, and the occasional outdoor group activity; promote patients' compliance with commitments, i.e. unit chores list; assist patients with completing their chores; participate in the therapeutic community settings, i.e. Kardex meetings.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe environment which is conducive to patients' emotional and physical well-being by being aware of the reason for the identity of the patients' who are on special or constant attention status and closely monitoring patients who are on special or constant attention status as required.
  • Assist with hospital and grounds searches for absent without leave (AWOL) patients.
  • Promote order by conducting and assisting in controlling any disturbances; assist in restraining out-of-control patients.
  • Assist in the clean up of broken glass, furniture, etc.; tidy unit kitchen and make patients' coffee.
  • Assist patients in maintaining a tidy environment, and under the direction of the Coordinator, to obtain, displace, and/or carry various items.
Qualifications

Grade twelve (12) and a Resident Care Aide certificate plus two (2) years' recent, related experience in a group home and/or other related areas where clients with psychiatric conditions may reside. Valid Class V BC Drivers' Licence. Basic First Aide certificate.
