Senior Process Engineer

The Senior Process Engineer will play a key role in supporting the operations, maintenance, and technical services departments at Cenovus Energy Inc. by providing process engineering expertise to ensure safe and efficient operation of the refinery.
This position is responsible for leading project engineering tasks to support the facilities capital improvement program, identifying plant vulnerabilities, resolving process issues, and working efficiently with operations, environment, maintenance, and technical services personnel.
The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of process safety management systems and be able to lead and complete multidisciplinary initiatives efficiently.
Key Responsibilities- Lead the development of project front-end scopes, including high-level cost estimates, economic assessments, and business justifications to support strategic decision-making
- Oversee and direct special projects and sophisticated studies, such as debottlenecking initiatives, to optimize plant performance and efficiency
- Manage and provide guidance for outsourced engineering work, including process optimization, scoping studies, and the creation of Design Basis Memoranda (DBM)
- Lead the creation of Authorization for Expenditures (AFE) and actively oversee project expenses, ensuring alignment with budgetary constraints and financial objectives
- Collaborate closely with the Technical Services team to provide expert review, sizing, and specification of upgraded or replacement equipment, ensuring alignment with operational goals
- Develop and oversee the creation of design case simulations for both brownfield and greenfield facilities, ensuring that design strategies align with project objectives and operational efficiencies
- Provide strategic oversight and support for the implementation and sustainment of COIMS projects, prioritizing activities, and contributing to long-range planning (LRP) and budget development
- Champion process safety by maintaining and updating Process Safety Information (PSI) and leading Over Pressure Protection System by Design (OPPSD) reviews, Over Pressure Risk Assessments (ORAs), and other critical safety evaluations
- Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering (or an equivalent engineering field) with proven experience and professional designation with APEGA or APEGS (or eligibility for professional designation)
- Minimum of 8-12 years of experience in operations or process engineering within an industrial facility, with the knowledge to interpret operating data to identify areas for improvement
- Shown understanding of relevant codes and standards (e.g., ASME B31.3, Section VIII, ABSA, CSA B51)
- Proficiency and experience with SAP is an asset
- Experience with refining simulation software such as Aspentech or Petrosim, or equivalent
- Strong leadership in personal and process safety, with the ability to lead and complete multidisciplinary initiatives efficiently
