Urban Forestry Safety and Training Specialist

The Urban Forestry Safety and Training Advisor plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of employees within the Urban Forestry Operations and Park Operations departments. This position is responsible for monitoring regulatory compliance and providing safety and best practice consultation services to supervisors and management.
Key Responsibilities- Research and stay up-to-date on urban forestry best practices and regulatory compliance requirements.
- Advise and consult with management on best practices and compliance requirements, and develop procedures and processes to document best practices and compliance.
- Mentor and coach management, supervisors, and crew members on new processes and practices.
- Conduct comprehensive onsite risk assessments and safety studies, and develop related safe work procedures, safety manuals, and training programs.
- Conduct monthly tailboard site inspections with supervisors and superintendents.
- Attend and participate in monthly crew talks.
- Investigate safety incidents and concerns, and provide recommendations to management on changes to procedures and practices.
- Develop and deliver safety and operational training programs, and prepare training agendas and resource materials.
- Oversee and plan occupational first aid, aerial and bucket rescue, ISA, and TRAQ training.
- Maintain a workplace accident database and related records, and prepare correspondence and reports.
The ideal candidate will have a recognized certificate or diploma in occupational health and safety, and relevant experience in urban forestry or park operations. They will also possess thorough knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations, rules, and procedures, as well as the ability to read and interpret documents, speak effectively before groups, and design training courses.
The candidate should also have the ability to work independently with little supervision, communicate effectively, and adapt to new technology. They should be skilled in the use of computers, and have the ability to recognize problems and respond, systematically gather information, and make timely decisions.
A current and valid Class 5 BC Driver's License or higher is also required, along with a satisfactory driving record.
