Position Overview

The individual in this role will oversee all technical operations for events held in Convocation Hall and other university venues, focusing on sound, lighting, and presentation design, as well as the maintenance and support of stage and audiovisual equipment. This position involves collaboration with student productions, touring shows, university conferences, and external technical service providers.

Key Responsibilities

Manage and coordinate the technical aspects of events in Convocation Hall, a 1,500-seat performance venue, along with smaller campus locations. Engage with performers and event managers to determine pre-event requirements for sound, lighting, staging, and other technical needs. Supervise incoming professional crews and student groups, ensuring effective technical support during event setups and performances, and manage their departure.

Oversee all production elements, including lighting design and operation, sound reinforcement and engineering, stage management, rigging, carpentry, video and audio recording, electrical work, props, and costumes for various events. Recruit, train, and supervise student technicians for events at Convocation Hall and other venues, including official ceremonies and performances sponsored by various departments.

Implement and enforce safety protocols regarding the use of lighting, sound, and audiovisual equipment on campus. Ensure the safety of attendees and non-production staff during events.

Identify and maintain essential equipment and facilities, ensuring that emergency systems, lighting, communication systems, and other components are in optimal condition. Collaborate with facilities management for necessary maintenance.

Research and recommend equipment upgrades for Convocation Hall within budget constraints. Provide technical consulting for sound and lighting setups in other campus venues as needed. Evaluate and procure new equipment, and perform installation and servicing as required.

Offer audiovisual support for academic needs and troubleshoot AV issues in classrooms and meeting spaces. Conduct maintenance and testing of digital technology and control systems in educational settings.

Ensure timely processing of work orders and other assigned duties.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Completion of two years of post-secondary education and one to three years of relevant experience, including coursework in stage lighting, sound technology, and stage management.
  • Experience with live productions, conferences, and technical equipment, along with strong communication skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Proficiency in stage carpentry, costuming, props, rigging, and electronics is advantageous.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, manage time effectively, and perform well in high-pressure live performance environments.
  • A valid driver's license and first aid certification are necessary.
  • Physical capability to lift heavy equipment, work at heights, and navigate catwalks and grid systems, with flexibility for long hours as needed.
