The Safety Branch of the Department of Labour, Skills, and Immigration prioritizes the well-being of workers in Nova Scotia. The Paralegal within the Incident Investigation Unit plays a crucial role in achieving compliance through direct enforcement and by contributing to prevention and awareness initiatives. About Our Opportunity

The Paralegal is responsible for delivering a range of case management and administrative services to the Incident Investigation Unit of Labour, Skills, and Immigration, in accordance with relevant legislation, regulations, and departmental policies. Under the guidance of the Unit Manager and Executive Director, the Paralegal must uphold the solicitor-client relationship with all clients, both internal and external.

This role is integral to the daily operations of the office. The Paralegal must demonstrate meticulous attention to detail and a thorough approach to all tasks while fostering a positive and collaborative team environment. Sensitivity to the needs of all clients is essential.

This position reports directly to the Incident Investigation Unit Manager.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Provide administrative assistance to the Incident Investigation Unit and the Executive Director as needed.
  • Draft high-quality documentation and correspondence related to the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other pertinent legal frameworks.
  • Compile and review all necessary disclosure materials.
  • Support the preparation of case files by managing all aspects of the file management process from initiation to resolution.
  • Ensure timely processing of legal documents and filings.
  • Assist the Unit Manager in maintaining organized paper and electronic files, conducting file reviews, and tracking file activities.
Qualifications and Experience

A two-year paralegal program from an accredited institution is required, although an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Willingness to work overtime, including evenings and weekends.

While proficiency in French is not required, it is considered an asset.
