The Position

We are seeking a Relief Child and Youth Care Counsellor to join our Therapeutic Campus-Based Care programs and group homes. As a member of our interdisciplinary team, you will play a vital role in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating treatment programs for our youth.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Attend to the physical safety, esteem, and developmental needs of our young people.
  2. Supervise, organize, and implement daily living activities, as well as recreational activities, to provide opportunities for educational and therapeutic interventions.
  3. Use routines and activities to give children and youth security and enable them to relate to others in socially acceptable ways.
  4. Provide meaningful and responsible role modelling, as well as direct teaching in areas of grooming, hygiene, dress, nutrition, and social manners.
  5. Identify and act on goal-related teaching opportunities, using systematic plans of instruction, appropriate teaching methods, and approaches to transfer information and skills.
  6. Select and make appropriate use of behavioral interventions and strategies.
  7. Communicate rules and behavioral limits and follow through on appropriate behavioral interventions.
  8. Improve the quality of life for our young people by attending to their physical environment.
  9. Monitor and work directly with youth in all aspects of their lives, liaise with parents and community groups.
  10. Promote and safeguard the rights, interests, and treatment of the people we serve by interceding on their behalf.
  11. Act as an avenue of recourse or grievance for the youth and represent their interests.
  12. In working with children, youth, parents/guardians, co-workers, other professionals, and the public, demonstrate appropriate conduct in terms of behavior, appearance, and presentation, and adhere to Agency expectations with regard to confidentiality.
  13. Attend to team responsibilities in terms of participation, communication, and demonstrating a positive attitude.
  14. Model socially acceptable values, integrity, fairness, and respect.
  15. Participate in professional development activities.
Qualifications and Skills
  1. Degree or diploma in Human Services or Social Sciences (or currently enrolled).
  2. Minimum 21 years of age (due to agency insurance requirements for driving).
  3. Experience working in group homes/congregate care (preferred).
  4. High level of personal competence in the formation and maintenance of caring and therapeutic relationships.
  5. Ability to engage children, youth, and families in the treatment process.
  6. Demonstrated interest, commitment, consistency, and a high level of personal maturity and responsibility.
  7. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  8. A Police Information Check, which includes a vulnerable sector search, is required (or is in process of being completed) prior to employment.
  9. A Child Intervention Record Check is required upon commencement of employment.
  10. Reliable transportation, valid driver's license, and ability to drive Agency vehicles is preferred (min. 2 years driving experience with a class 5/GDL class 5 license).
  11. Completion of ASIST, First Aid, Therapeutic Crisis Intervention, and Certified with CYCAA would be considered an asset.
