Job Summary:

As a Registered Practical Nurse with McMaster University, you will be responsible for providing high-quality patient care services under the direction of healthcare practitioners or registered nurses. Your scope of practice will be determined by the College of Nurses of Ontario.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct thorough nursing assessments, develop care plans, and provide interventions to patients, including health education and support.
  • Independently provide care to students using medical directives, ensuring their safety and well-being.
  • Perform patient assessments, determine appropriate action plans, and provide care within your defined scope of responsibility.
  • Triage patients entering the centre to appropriate physicians, prioritizing their needs and ensuring timely care.
  • Monitor patient vital signs, providing accurate and timely information to healthcare teams.
  • Provide general health and wellness education to patients, explaining medical terminology and conditions in a clear and concise manner.
  • Offer first-line supportive counseling to students experiencing crises, screening for risk of suicide and providing appropriate referrals.
  • Develop and implement health education programs to promote healthy lifestyles, including nutrition, exercise, stress management, and healthy relationships.
  • Communicate and collaborate with external health agencies regarding communicable diseases and information sharing.
  • Organize daily clinic team work, ensuring efficient and effective patient care.
  • Perform daily monitoring of vaccine fridges, tracking temperatures and expiry dates.
  • Order vaccines and medications from public health, ensuring timely delivery and availability.
  • Schedule lab and diagnostic procedures, as well as follow-up appointments for patients, ensuring seamless care coordination.
  • Ensure exam rooms are adequately stocked with medical and laboratory supplies, vaccinations, and medications.
  • Prepare patient charts prior to visits, ensuring accurate and up-to-date information.
  • Complete minor dressing changes for patient wounds and remove sutures, promoting wound healing and patient comfort.
  • Perform ear syringing and ear examinations, providing accurate diagnoses and treatment plans.
  • Perform phlebotomy on students unable to attend laboratory, ensuring safe and efficient blood collection.
  • Provide required assistance to physicians during medical procedures, ensuring patient safety and comfort.
  • Administer various injections, including vaccinations, immunizations, and skin tests, following established protocols.
  • Consult medical literature to determine adverse drug reactions and interactions, ensuring patient safety.
  • Utilize medical diagnostic devices, such as peak flow monitors and glucometers, to provide accurate diagnoses and treatment plans.
  • Document nursing notes in the electronic health records system, ensuring accurate and timely information sharing.
  • Complete and submit various forms to external health agencies, ensuring compliance with regulations and guidelines.
  • Calculate dosages, in accordance with established criteria, for the administration of medication, ensuring patient safety.
  • Ensure that patients receive accurate and timely medical information and literature, promoting informed decision-making.
  • Receive and resolve patient complaints, escalating unresolved issues to the appropriate area.
  • Organize transportation for clients with mental and physical health concerns, ensuring safe and efficient transportation.
  • Ensure test specimens are properly labeled and requisitions are completed and sent to the lab for processing, ensuring accurate and timely test results.
  • Update and maintain confidential files and records, ensuring patient confidentiality and data security.
  • Prepare and send sensitive medical records to clients electronically, ensuring secure and timely transmission.
  • Handle sensitive material in accordance with established policies and procedures, ensuring patient confidentiality and data security.
Supervision:
  • Frequently responsible for orienting and supervising new RPNs and students to use electronic medical records and understand clinical policies and procedures.
Requirements:
  • 2-year Community College diploma in Registered Practical Nursing.
  • Registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a certified Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) and hold a current certificate of competence with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Requires 3 years of providing care to a diverse patient population for a wide range of medical and mental health issues.
