Parcel Handler - Job Overview

The Parcel Handler plays a crucial role in the logistics chain by efficiently loading, unloading, and sorting packages. This position involves physically managing packages, which includes lifting, pushing, pulling, transporting, and placing items in a safe and effective manner. Parcel Handlers may rotate through various tasks and locations, including loading, unloading, palletizing, scanning, weighing, and quality assurance.

  • Employs the 'hand-surface method' for all package handling activities.
  • Handles the loading and unloading of packages from delivery vehicles, trailers, pallets, conveyor systems, and loading grids.
  • Engages in continuous lifting, transporting, pushing, and pulling of packages for approximately 3 to 5 hours, with the flexibility to work multiple shifts as needed.
  • Identifies the correct conveyor system by scanning packages, interpreting labels and charts, verifying numbers, and sorting packages accordingly.
  • Completes additional assigned responsibilities as required.

Key Responsibilities of Parcel Handlers:

Training Role:

  • Instructs fellow Parcel Handlers on effective loading, unloading, palletizing, and scanning techniques to promote safe and efficient package movement.

Air Package Handler Duties:

  • Conducts a thorough inspection process for packages to ensure that 'Air Restricted' items are not placed in air containers.

Educational Requirements:

No formal education is required.

Experience Requirements:

No prior experience is necessary.

Preferred qualifications for specialized roles include:

  • Parcel Handler Trainer: Six months of experience as a Parcel Handler.
  • Air Package Handler: Six months of experience as a Parcel Handler.

Essential Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to comprehend and follow instructions related to work tasks and safety protocols.
  • Capability to accurately discern numbers and information for proper package sorting.
  • Proficiency in using basic tools and equipment such as roller belts, dock carts, handheld scanners, chutes, and unloading devices.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Parcel Handlers operating switching equipment must possess a valid driver's license and maintain a Department of Transportation (DOT) record.
  • Parcel Handler Trainer: Ability to effectively train multiple colleagues simultaneously.
  • Air Package Handler: Must complete and maintain required training, including government-regulated Indirect Air Carrier (IAC) training, with annual recertification.

Work Environment:

  • Must be prepared to work in varying temperatures, both hot and cold.
  • Will be exposed to a noisy work environment.
  • Ability to lift and carry weights ranging from 5 to 50 pounds is essential.
  • No travel is expected for this position.

Shift Information:

Shifts may vary based on operational needs, typically including early morning hours and weekends. Pay rate is competitive.
