Parcel Handler - Job Overview

The Parcel Handler plays a crucial role in the logistics chain by efficiently loading, unloading, and sorting packages. This position involves physically handling packages, which includes lifting, pushing, pulling, and transporting items to ensure they are processed safely and effectively.

  • Utilizes the 'hand-surface method' for all package handling tasks.
  • Loads and unloads packages from various delivery vehicles, trailers, pallets, conveyor systems, and loading grids.
  • Engages in continuous lifting, transporting, pushing, and pulling of packages for extended periods, demonstrating the ability to work multiple shifts as needed.
  • Identifies the correct conveyor system by scanning packages, interpreting labels and charts, and sorting items accordingly.
  • Completes other assigned duties as required.

Key Responsibilities of Parcel Handlers:

Training Role:

  • Instructs fellow Parcel Handlers on effective techniques for loading, unloading, palletizing, and scanning to promote safe and efficient package movement.

Air Package Handler:

  • Conducts a thorough inspection process for packages designated as 'Air Restricted' to prevent improper loading into air containers.

Educational Requirements:

No formal education is required.

Experience Requirements:

No prior experience is necessary, although specialized roles may prefer candidates with experience at FedEx Express Corporation:

  • Parcel Handler Trainer: Six months of experience as a Parcel Handler at FedEx Express Corporation is preferred.
  • Air Package Handler: Six months of experience as a Parcel Handler at FedEx Express Corporation is preferred.

Essential Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to comprehend and follow work instructions and safety protocols.
  • Proficient in discerning numbers and information for accurate package sorting.
  • Capable of using basic tools and equipment, including roller belts, dock carts, handheld scanners, chutes, and unloading devices.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Parcel Handlers operating switching equipment must possess a valid driver's license and maintain a Department of Transportation (DOT) record.
  • Parcel Handler Trainer: Capable of training multiple colleagues simultaneously.
  • Air Package Handler: Must complete and maintain required training and certifications, including government-regulated Indirect Air Carrier (IAC) training.

Work Environment:

  • Work may be conducted in varying temperature conditions.
  • Exposure to a noisy environment is expected.
  • Must be able to lift and carry weights ranging from 5 to 50 pounds.
  • No travel is required for this position.

Shift Information:

Shifts may vary based on operational needs, typically including early morning hours. Compensation is competitive.
