Program Overview

The Language Assessment and Referral Centre (LARC) operates under the auspices of IWS and is funded by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Key Responsibilities

  1. Perform screenings to assess eligibility for federally funded language initiatives.
  2. Administer complimentary evaluations to ascertain clients' current language capabilities.
  3. Provide clients with information regarding federal language training options.
  4. Conduct standardized assessments of language proficiency utilizing appropriate testing tools in accordance with established placement guidelines and organizational policies.
  5. Implement necessary screenings for literacy clients, employing approved assessment tools.
  6. Prepare testing environments, ensuring availability of adequate materials and equipment for assessments.
  7. Deliver exceptional client service and foster a welcoming atmosphere during testing.
  8. Relay pertinent client information to the LARC team to enhance client success and program improvement.
  9. Manage a workload of 6 new assessments daily within a 7-hour schedule, while remaining adaptable to clients' unique needs.
  10. Collaborate with fellow assessors to verify and agree on language benchmarks across all skill levels.
  11. Provide constructive feedback to clients and address inquiries regarding their English language proficiency.
  12. Utilize various methods to conduct both paper-based and digital assessments, including on-site and remote evaluations.
  13. Compile client Assessment Reports, ensuring secure storage of all completed test materials in line with LARC and CCLB Policies.
  14. Safeguard the privacy and confidentiality of client information and testing materials.
  15. Ensure adequate supplies of testing materials and relevant documentation for assessment days.
  16. Report any breaches of security or confidentiality to management.
  17. Work in conjunction with the Head Assessor to serve as the organization's liaison for assessment-related inquiries.
  18. Engage in mandatory team training, professional development sessions, and calibration meetings.
  19. Maintain necessary professional certifications and standards relevant to ESL/EAL teaching and language assessment.
  20. Be prepared to provide coverage for absent assessors as needed.
  21. Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned by the LARC Saskatchewan Program Manager to achieve program objectives.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Linguistics, Modern Languages, or English.
  • Completion of a TESL training program recognized by TESL Canada or provincial teaching credentials, including a minimum of 250 hours and practicum: TESL Canada Level II Certification.

Experience

  • Minimum of 300 hours of experience teaching ESL to adults.
  • Experience with LINC and/or Stage 1/2 is advantageous.
  • Background in the immigrant, refugee, settlement, and integration sectors is beneficial.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Familiarity with CLB through participation in workshops and knowledge of ESL for ALL (Adult Literacy Learners).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Awareness and sensitivity to multicultural issues.
  • Proficient interviewing and decision-making abilities.
  • Experience in teaching and conducting assessments in ESL (Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing).
  • Understanding of second language acquisition processes.
  • Excellent English communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Able to manage multiple tasks and work effectively under pressure, both independently and collaboratively.
  • Experience in the settlement sector and/or providing direct client services.
  • Strong customer service, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office and relevant client data management systems.
  • Positive demeanor and enthusiastic personality.
  • Awareness of challenges faced by the immigrant/refugee/newcomer community.

Additional Requirements

  • Criminal Record Check obtained within the last 6 months is required.
  • Submission of education certificates is required.
  • Credential verification may be required.

Position Details

  • Program/Department: Newcomer Orientation and Language Assessments.
  • Work Schedule: Tuesday to Saturday, 9:00 am – 4:30 pm.
  • Compensation: $30.90/hour plus MERCs Employment Status: In-Scope & Term Contract.
  • Contract Duration: Until specified expiry date.
  • Work Location: Primarily in-office.
