Position Overview

The Oncology Nursing Specialist plays a pivotal role in exemplifying clinical excellence and adhering to the core competencies outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), as well as the policies and procedures established by Southlake Regional Health Centre. This role involves collaboration with a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

The ideal candidate will be proactive, self-motivated, and an integral member of a dynamic interdisciplinary team focused on delivering high-quality patient care and optimizing patient flow. Responsibilities include providing outstanding care to a diverse population of acute medical patients in a fast-paced environment.

The Oncology Nursing Specialist in Outpatient Cancer Clinics and Systemic Therapy Suite operates with a high degree of autonomy and accountability, working alongside oncologists and the inter-professional healthcare team to ensure a seamless continuum of care. This includes prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, palliative care, bereavement, and survivorship.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver patient and family-centered care within the RN scope of practice, guided by the three-factor framework of the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Adhere to established hospital policies and procedures, including emergency protocols.
  • Ensure compliance with entry-to-practice competencies, standards of practice, guidelines, and legislation.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and all members of the healthcare team.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team members to provide comprehensive care for patients with complex health issues.
  • Offer consultation and clinical support to peers as necessary.
  • Contribute to the ongoing assessment and documentation of each patient's health status.
  • Assist in developing and implementing the Plan of Care, evaluating its effectiveness.
  • Support the orientation and training of new staff members and students.
  • Act as a role model, integrating safe and best practices into daily activities to ensure exemplary care.
  • Take a leadership role in coordinating patient care within the assigned area.
  • Assume charge nurse responsibilities when designated.
  • Utilize human and material resources effectively.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of clinical pathways.
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform comprehensive health assessments, whether in-person or virtually, identifying factors impacting the patient's cancer journey.
  • Formulate and implement a collaborative care plan with the patient, family, and inter-professional team.
  • Apply evidence-informed knowledge and skills in managing cancer treatment modalities, including administration and symptom management.
  • Recognize and critically analyze situations for potential ethical and legal issues, applying ethical frameworks to support patient and family decision-making.

Qualifications

  • Registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as a Registered Nurse.
  • BScN preferred.
  • Certification in chemotherapy administration from a recognized institution within the first six months of employment, with annual recertification.
  • Learning Essential Approaches to Palliative Care (LEAP) certification preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of recent and relevant oncology/palliative nursing experience in an acute care setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of oncology and palliative nursing practice principles required.
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication, both written and verbal.
  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and critical thinking skills.
  • Commitment to providing exceptional patient experiences and fostering a collaborative healthcare environment.
