Position Overview

The Oncology Nursing Specialist exemplifies clinical proficiency and adheres to the practice standards set forth by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), along with the operational protocols of Southlake Regional Health Centre. This role requires collaboration within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

The ideal candidate will be proactive, self-motivated, and an integral part of a dynamic team focused on delivering high-quality patient care. Responsibilities include providing exceptional care to a varied acute medical patient demographic in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver patient-centered care within the RN scope of practice, utilizing the three-factor framework of the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Adhere to established hospital policies and procedures, including emergency protocols.
  • Ensure practice aligns with entry-to-practice competencies, standards, guidelines, and legislation.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and all healthcare team members.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team to address complex health issues.
  • Provide ongoing assessment and documentation of each patient's health status.
  • Assist in developing and implementing care plans, evaluating their effectiveness.
  • Support the orientation and training of new staff and students.
  • Act as a role model, integrating safe practices into daily activities.
  • Take a leadership role in coordinating patient care within the assigned area.
  • Participate in the development and evaluation of clinical pathways.
  • Perform initial and ongoing health assessments, identifying factors impacting the patient's cancer journey.
  • Formulate and implement care plans in collaboration with patients, families, and the interprofessional team.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill in managing cancer treatment modalities.
  • Recognize and analyze potential ethical and legal issues in patient care.

Qualifications

  • Registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as a Registered Nurse.
  • BScN preferred.
  • Certification in chemotherapy administration required within the first six months of employment.
  • Experience in oncology/palliative nursing in an acute care setting preferred.
  • Strong clinical assessment and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Commitment to providing exceptional patient experiences and fostering a collaborative team environment.
