Position Overview:

The Youth Housing Support Specialist plays a crucial role in assisting young individuals, collaborating with the team at Phoenix Youth Programs, landlords, and various support services to ensure that youth can secure and sustain their housing. This role emphasizes the facilitation of shared living arrangements for youth, taking into account financial considerations from diverse sources, including social assistance benefits.

Phoenix Youth Programs is dedicated to providing essential services such as counseling, community resource referrals, advocacy, health support, and basic needs assistance for youth aged 16-24 who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness.

Compensation Package: Competitive annual salary, comprehensive medical insurance, Employee and Family Assistance Program, retirement savings plan contributions, vacation entitlement, generous sick leave, and opportunities for professional development.

Work Schedule: Full-time position, Monday to Friday, with standard working hours and some flexibility for evening engagements.

Reporting Structure: This position reports directly to the Manager of Phoenix Youth Programs.

Screening Criteria: Given the sensitive nature of the work with youth, candidates must undergo a thorough background check, including a vulnerable sector search and verification of educational qualifications.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Adhere to the policies and procedures established by Phoenix Youth Programs. Collaborate with youth and other program staff to develop effective housing strategies for those facing homelessness. Work alongside fellow Housing Support Specialists and other team members to assist youth in creating housing and goal-oriented plans. Manage a caseload of approximately 20-25 youth within the housing support program. Build and maintain relationships with landlords and property managers in the community. Compile a list of suitable housing options for youth transitioning to independent living. Assist youth with moving logistics, including the transportation of belongings and apartment cleaning. Provide intake, assessment, and referral services, as well as crisis intervention and eviction prevention support. Engage with other agencies on behalf of youth and participate in community initiatives as needed. Collaborate with other Housing Support Specialists to enhance service delivery. Advocate for youth needs with community organizations to address barriers and leverage strengths. Conduct educational outreach about the organization and the challenges faced by homeless youth. Maintain accurate records, assessments, and statistics while ensuring confidentiality. Collect and analyze data related to youth accessing housing support to inform program evaluation. Contribute to the development of the organization and participate in internal committees and projects. Assist in the creation of quality, youth-centered programs and services. Foster a supportive environment that encourages youth empowerment.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Strong understanding of youth development and homelessness issues. Familiarity with a housing-first approach. Proficient in anti-oppressive practices and client-centered approaches. Knowledge of mental health, substance use, and crisis intervention strategies. Understanding of financial management and trusteeship programs. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills. Ability to establish healthy relationships with at-risk youth. Extensive knowledge of community resources and social service systems. Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle are required. Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and internet navigation.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND:

Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Relevant professional certification or registration is preferred. Minimum of five years of experience working with at-risk youth in case management and advocacy roles. Training in crisis intervention, first aid, and medication dispensing is an asset. Experience in program development and working within non-profit organizations is advantageous.
