Job Overview
Summary

Under the supervision of the Operations Leader, the Registered Nurse evaluates, identifies, plans, implements, and assesses the nursing care necessary to support patients/residents in fulfilling their physical, social, spiritual, and psychological requirements, utilizing a recognized framework for nursing practice.

The nurse develops, implements, assesses, and modifies the care plan as needed. Individual and/or group education is integrated into the care plan and nursing actions, along with referrals to other identified resources. The Registered Nurse collaborates with fellow nurses and healthcare professionals by sharing knowledge and demonstrating procedures.

The Registered Nurse operates within an interdisciplinary clinical framework, adhering to the BCCNM Standards of Practice and aligning with the mission, vision, values, and established protocols of Providence Health Care.


Qualifications / Skills and Education

Education

Registration with the BC College of Nurses & Midwives as a practicing RN registrant, or in Residential Care and Mental Health, registration with the BC College of Nurses & Midwives as a practicing RN or a practicing RPN registrant.


Skills and Abilities
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrated knowledge and ability to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) procedures relevant to the service area.
Ability to function as part of an interdisciplinary team.
Strong decision-making and analytical skills.
Proficient in managing interpersonal relationships.

Physical capability to fulfill the responsibilities of the role.

Responsibilities

Evaluates patient/resident status through various methods, including reviewing charts, observing patients/residents, interviewing them and their families, completing questionnaires, gathering collateral information, and consulting with peers and other healthcare team members.

Assesses patient/resident needs and problems, plans, implements, evaluates, and prioritizes nursing care and interventions, and formulates the care plan using clinical judgment and evidence-based practices.


Delivers nursing care in accordance with established policies, procedures, technology, and PHC standards.

Monitors patient/resident progress, evaluates outcomes, reassesses if goals are unmet, and adjusts the care plan based on evaluations.


Records observations and communicates changes in patient/resident conditions to designated staff.

Provides direct nursing interventions for crisis management and life-threatening situations.

Documents assessments, care plans, patient/resident status, progress, and discharge plans in both manual and computerized formats.


Accompanies patients during medical transport as required.

Identifies and addresses patient/resident and family educational needs, provides educational materials, incorporates individual and/or group teaching into the care plan, and/or refers to other resources as necessary.

Facilitates group sessions for patients/families as needed and guides patients/residents/families in developing and maintaining health-promoting behaviors.

Provides direction to other staff members, such as Care Attendants and Licensed Practical Nurses, regarding patient/resident care and promotes effective teamwork within the units.

Responsibilities include collegial sharing of information, demonstrating and/or guiding related tasks, providing feedback on staff performance, ensuring staff are aware of assignments, and reallocating clinical/health-related tasks as necessary.

Participates in nursing orientation and shares clinical knowledge with nursing staff, nursing students, and other interdisciplinary team members.

Participates in and attends in-service training and other educational programs as required.

Engages in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient/resident care policies, procedures, educational materials, and best practices through involvement in unit, program, and quality improvement activities, including nursing practice councils, clinical pathway development, research, and education committees.

Supports nursing research by identifying potential clinical nursing research projects, adapting research to practice, and participating in research activities to enhance nursing practice.


Facilitates discharge planning and collaborates with families and community resource agencies.

Advocates for patients/residents to uphold their rights to dignity, respect, privacy, confidentiality, autonomy, and access to information.


Performs other related duties as assigned.
