The organization seeks individuals with a Doctor in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Registered/Licensed/Certified Veterinary Technician (RVT/LVT/CVT) license, or a B.S. in Animal Science or related field to represent the organization’s No Animals Were Harmed® program as a Certified Animal Safety Representative (CASR) on motion picture, television, commercial and new media locations. Job Summary Represent American Humane Hollywood’s "No Animals Were Harmed®" program on production locations, ensuring humane treatment of animal performers, documenting animal housing and care, and overseeing scenes involving animal performers. Advise on animal safety issues in accordance with AH’s Guidelines for the Safe Use of Animals in Filmed Media. Build critical relationships with animal trainers, production executives, crew members and occasionally media. Responsibilities and Duties - Monitoring Animal Action in Filmed Media Educate film personnel in humane matters, assist any manner that pertains to the animals performing in the film, and ensure the safety and welfare of the animal(s) involved. - Report Writing Prepare timely and accurate reports detailing animal action, how it was achieved, and all safety precautions. Reports determine whether a production receives the AH end credit certification, "No Animals Were Harmed®", and serve as an accountability record regarding the treatment of the animal(s). - Communication and Diplomacy Communicate and collaborate with Hollywood program staff and production personnel, including producers, directors, assistant directors, special effects personnel, pyrotechnics personnel, firefighters, wranglers, trainers, veterinarians, and local enforcement agencies. Liaise with local agencies when incidents require adjudication. - Location of Work Assignments Work locally and in larger geographic regions as noted above. Be available for travel to various locations throughout the country on an as-needed basis, including optional international travel. Assignments vary from brief calls to several months and may be short notice. Production days can be 10–12 hours. CASRs must be equipped to handle extreme and changeable weather conditions. - Research When required, research species to perform effectively on an assignment. Contact the scheduling department for species-specific humane care, housing, safety precautions and filming requirements. For dangerous animal action, contact the Hollywood program office for instruction and advice. General Process 1. Read the script to determine the animal action being filmed. 2. Invite the trainer and/or production to discuss how the scripted action will be achieved, time permitting. 3. Log pre‑production information in the Hollywood program database. 4. Scheduling department contacts an available CASR. 5. CASR receives all available information for the production. 6. Arrange housing and transportation when necessary. 7. CASR obtains detailed instructions on production contacts, locations, dangerous action, trainer/wrangler info, and any prior issues. 8. Receive all necessary paperwork. 9. Sign confidentiality papers vetted by AH’s legal department. 10. Ensure animal safety and welfare throughout shoots. 11. Submit all reports on time per the Report Writing policy. Essential Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Must have one or more of the following qualifications: - Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) - Registered/Licensed/Certified Veterinary Technician (RVT/LVT/CVT) - B.S. in Animal Science or related field or equivalent experience - Diversity of experience in animal health and behavior preferred - Commitment to animal welfare - Equine knowledge and experience preferred - Broad knowledge of animals: horses, snakes and spiders, fish, dogs, birds, goats, cats - Excellent verbal and written communication; active listening - Adept at building collaborative relationships and demonstrating diplomacy - Knowledge of special effects and stunts involving animals preferred - Work effectively without direct supervision in the field - Detail‑oriented and organized - Excellent judgment - Analyze situations and make recommendations within short periods - Adept at using computer for email and writing reports - Successful completion of the American Humane Society Certified Animal Safety Representative Training Course is required Physical Demands and Work Environment All selected applicants must complete and pass the CASR training during their probationary period. Training lasts approximately 5 weeks: 1 week of classroom training and 4 weeks of on‑set training. - Work primarily outdoors, often in extreme cold, heat, wet or humid weather. - Walking, climbing, balancing, standing, lifting on occasion 10 kg or more; reaching, handling, stooping and bending as needed. - Excellent vision from 6 meters or more. - Valid driver’s license required; ability to provide own transportation. - Local, national or international travel will be required on-call, sometimes on short notice. - Monitoring may occur any time of day or night; production days may be 10–12 hours.
