Role Responsibilities

The Hinton Training Centre (HTC) plays a critical role in preparing Alberta’s emergency response and natural resource professionals through high-quality, accessible classroom, field and online training. With the rapid expansion of online learning since 2021, this position provides strategic leadership over the Online Learning Section, ensuring the development, delivery, and continuous improvement of digital and in-person training programs.

The Director is responsible for overseeing the planning, coordination, and delivery of wildfire and forest management training across HTC, satellite locations, and online platforms. This role requires strong leadership, collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders, and a forward-thinking approach to training, technology, and operational support.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead the planning, development, and delivery of wildfire and forest management training programs, ensuring content aligns with current SOPs, legislation, and provincial standards.
- Provide leadership and direction to training teams, including policy development, program evaluation, and continuous improvement of digital and in-person learning.
- Ensure all training materials, equipment, and delivery methods remain current, relevant, and responsive to operational and industry needs.
- Oversee HTC facilities, including academic buildings, residences, dining, training forest, and remote camps.
- Ensure safe, efficient operations and a positive training environment for all participants. Build and maintain partnerships with post-secondary institutions, provincial/territorial wildfire agencies, municipal partners, and national organizations to support shared training initiatives.
- Represent Alberta in national discussions on training standards, certification requirements, and emerging practices in wildfire and forest management.
- Manage contracts and projects related to services, facilities, and instructional support while ensuring compliance with procurement policies and financial regulations.
- Ensure safe, efficient operations and a positive training environment for all HTC clients, staff, and program.

Qualifications

- University graduation in a related field such as Forest Management, Natural Resources, Emergency Management, Education, Business Administration supplemented by six years progressively responsible experience, or
- Diploma in Forestry or a related discipline plus ten years of experience in natural resource and wildfire management is required.

Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.

Assets:

- Membership, or eligibility for membership, with the Alberta Association of Forest Management Professionals is preferred.
- Understanding of budgeting and expenditure control.
- Comprehensive knowledge of wildfire, forest management, and forest health programs, legislation, policy, and regulations.
- In-depth understanding of wildfire suppression methods, cause, behavior, prevention principles, and techniques.
- Familiarity with provincial legislation related to forestry, environmental protection, and public lands management.
- Experience in natural resource and wildfire management.
- Large, multi-year, provincial-wide project management experience including managing, forecasting, and resourcing technical, diverse and complex projects with tight timelines.
- Extensive program knowledge in adult education, forest and wildfire management, and policy development, with a deep understanding of relevant legislation and health and safety standards.

This competition is recruiting for a full-time permanent position in Hinton Training Centre area with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday. The successful candidate will be operating out of an office and field setting. The incumbent may be requested to work overtime, including evening and weekends due to the emergency nature of wildfires.

Travel within the region on a regular basis and throughout the province on occasion will be required as part of your responsibilities and the successful candidate will have frequent contact with Ministry staff and colleagues, other government departments, clients, and external stakeholder’s province wide. This job will require you to fly in a helicopter and work extended hours including evenings and weekends. The position may also require you to work away from home up to 24 days based on emergent situations within the province.
