The British Columbia Teachers' Federation (BCTF), located on the unceded ancestral territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Səlil̓w̓ətaɬ/Selilwitulh, and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nations since 1917, is a union of professionals representing over 52,000 kindergarten to grade 12 public school teachers throughout the province of BC.

The BCTF office building is situated in close proximity to the Canada Line and other major transit routes in a central Vancouver location. Function and Purpose

The Accounting Department is responsible for the financial planning, management, and control of resources for the BCTF. This includes maintaining accurate financial records and ensuring efficient financial operations to support the goals of each entity. The department also implements financial controls, supports business activities, and provides financial reports and insights to support informed decision‑making.

The Senior Accountant oversees the overall accounting functions and financial analysis of the Salary Indemnity Trust (SIT) and provides oversight for the BCTF Staff Pension Plan and Building Operation statements. Additionally, the Senior Accountant is responsible for managing tax compliance and leading the development and improvement of accounting and reporting systems.

Principal duties and responsibilities

- Financial reporting and responsibilities

- Oversees all financial aspects of the Salary Indemnity Trust (SIT), including preparing, reviewing, and analyzing monthly and annual financial statements to ensure accuracy, compliance, and completeness.

- Develops and generates monthly program expense reports for all entities, collaborating with staff to ensure accuracy and improve understanding of financial performance.

- Prepares investment reports and presentations for the SIT, analyzing portfolio performance against benchmarks and ensuring compliance with asset allocation guidelines.

- Prepares and analyzes quarterly cash flow statements to ensure accurate reporting and effective liquidity management.

- Provides ad hoc financial analyses to support data‑driven decision‑making.

- Supports the Treasurer and CFO in delivering comprehensive financial reports and presentations to the SIT Board of Trustees, ensuring clarity and accuracy.

- Authorizes and approves SIT and Building transactions in accordance with approval policies, ensuring compliance with budgets, subcodes, and authorization procedures.

- Manages updates to all BCTF budgets within the accounting software’s budgeting module.

- Collaborates with the HR Manager to oversee Staff Pension Plan transactions and reconcile intercompany accounts.

- Reconciles and enters payroll entries confidentially to maintain labour costing accuracy and alignment with payroll budgets.

- Oversees month‑end and year‑end closing processes for the SIT, including reviewing and approving recurring journal entries and account reconciliations to ensure accuracy and compliance with accounting standards.

- Performs other related duties as required.

- Audit, internal controls and taxes

- Leads the preparation and audit of annual financial statements for the SIT, including preparing lead sheets, performing investment sensitivity analyses, compiling supporting documentation, and collaborating with external auditors to ensure GAAP compliance and comprehensive records.

- Oversees and reviews annual financial statements for the Staff Pension Plan and Building Operations audits, ensuring compliance with Canadian accounting standards and completeness of reporting.

- Prepares and files corporate tax returns and other tax information returns, ensuring accuracy, compliance with Canadian tax laws, and timely submission.

- Reviews, prepares, and submits monthly and quarterly statutory remittances, ensuring compliance with tax regulations and timely electronic reporting and payment.

- Reviews taxable benefits for honorariums, program speakers, grants, and scholarships, ensuring proper classification, and prepares and issues T4As, resolving discrepancies as needed.

- Collaborates with the Controller to design, implement, and monitor internal controls, providing recommendations to strengthen financial processes and ensure compliance.

- ERP Systems and financial technology

- Serves as the departmental technology representative, coordinating with internal divisions and external vendors to support the implementation, maintenance, and optimization of financial systems. Acts as a key liaison for troubleshooting system issues, testing electronic payment processes, and identifying alternative workflows during upgrades.

- Manages the implementation of accounting system changes, including defining requirements, conducting testing, and collaborating with consultants to ensure integration and optimal functionality.

- Oversees the efficient transfer of member data from the payroll, membership, and SIT benefit systems, ensuring accuracy and completeness.

- Liaises with other departments to design automated Power BI dashboards, leveraging financial data to analyze KPI trends, variances, and overall financial.

- Manages reporting software to develop specialized management reports, identifying and extracting key indicators to ensure information is accurate, timely, and actionable.

- Training and development

- Develops and delivers training sessions to BCTF staff and members on accounting processes, policies, and best practices, promoting compliance and clear understanding of financial procedures.

- Provides backup to the Controller in the event of absences, heavy workload and any other challenging situations.

Required experience

- Six (6) years of experience in a senior accounting role, including at least three (3) years of post- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation experience.
- Three (3) years of post‑designation experience in budget preparation, as well as the preparation and analysis of financial statements.
- Five (5) years of experience working with Microsoft Excel at an advanced level, developing presentations, and presenting financial data.
- Three (3) years of experience and knowledge of Canadian accounting standards preferably Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE) or International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and Canadian tax laws and regulatory compliance.
- Two (2) years of experience implementing and optimizing Windows‑based enterprise resource planning (ERP) accounting software and related report‑writing tools.

Required education/training

- University degree in business administration or commerce.
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation.
