Position Description
Choosing to work for The Hospital for Sick Children means that you've chosen more than a job; you've chosen a career where you can have a meaningful impact on the lives of children and families every day. Our staff are our greatest strength, and SickKids works hard to provide a supportive working environment where Nurse Practitioners can give their best work possible. Working in collaboration with the interdisciplinary Health Care team, Nurse Practitioners at SickKids have the opportunity to provide expertise in the areas of:
- Clinical Practice
- Education, Mentorship, and Research
- Leadership and Organizational & Systems Management
We are currently looking for a Nurse Practitioner to join the Bone Marrow Failure and Myelodysplasia Program in the Division of Haematology/Oncology to provide leadership and promote excellence in family-centred nursing care through the five main role components of expert practice, education, consultation, research, and leader/change agent. The Marrow Failure Program at SickKids is a dedicated program that includes a multi-disciplinary and multi-specialty team to treat patients with bone marrow failure and their unique medical needs. In addition to bone marrow failure complications, many of these syndromes are associated with complex medical issues, as well as an increased risk of cancer later in life.
Here's What You'll Get To Do
- Integrate nursing and medical skills and knowledge within a broad scope of advanced nursing practice.
- Assume a leadership position in the field of multidisciplinary care for complex haematological disorders.
- Work with a team of physicians, nurses, social work, and a dietician to develop clinical expertise and maintain a wide knowledge base related to the clinical manifestations, diagnoses, treatments, and associated therapy-related complications of inherited and acquired bone marrow failure conditions.
- Become an expert in the genetics of bone marrow failure conditions, including theoretical knowledge, consenting families for genetic testing, interpretation of results, and genetic counselling.
- Contribute to quality improvement within the department, education initiatives via various platforms, as well as marrow failure and nursing research.
- Perform patient assessments and coordinate the interdisciplinary plan of care for this select patient population.
- Develop broad clinical skills and experience in Haematology to lend support to this growing and expanding clinical service.
- Develop care plans with patients/families and the interprofessional team.
- Monitor patients' responses to their care plans.
- Assume a leadership role in influencing clinical nursing practice and the provision of care.
- Integrate research into practice and contribute to advancing the quality of clinical practice.
- Identify and link to services and resources in the community.
- Partner with children/families to navigate their chronic illness and advocate for their needs.
- Provide relevant health education to children and families that is based on their needs, learning styles, and stage of development.
- Collaborate with Haematologists in the adult community to seamlessly transition care as patients age out of SickKids.
- Collaborate with community hospitals, schools, and home care to ensure high-quality patient care is supported in different settings.
- Facilitate specialized testing through international labs.
Here's What You'll Need
- Master of Nursing or equivalent with a clinical focus.
- Completion of a Post-Master of Nursing (NP Field) Diploma in Paediatrics or Primary Health Care.
- Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario within the RN (Extended Class) in good standing.
- 5 years of clinical nursing experience in paediatrics is required.
- Previous experience in a leadership role.
- Excellent communication and relational skills.
- Flexible and adaptable to work with different care teams within the Haematology Section.
- Ability to act as a change agent, and foster teamwork and consensus-building.
- Innovative critical thinking with excellent problem-solving skills.
- Commitment to life-long learning to grow NP practice.
- Knowledge of theoretical frameworks and research application.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) and experience advancing EDI objectives.
Assets
- Experience working with Haematology patient population.
Employment Type
- 0.6 FTE, 18-month contract position, starting November 11th, 2024.
Our Commitment to Diversity
The children and families we care for are from a variety of communities, and so are our employees. We welcome and encourage everyone to join our organization and be part of our team.
When requested, SickKids will provide access and inclusion supports to eligible candidates to support their full engagement during the interview and assessment process. Information received related to access or inclusion will be addressed confidentially.
Thank you for your interest in joining SickKids. Only those applicants selected for an interview will be contacted. In accordance with our Hospital policy, employment at SickKids is conditional upon the Hospital's receipt of all necessary documentation.
