Driftpile Cree Nation (DCN) is a proud and culturally strong First Nation located between the towns of Slave Lake from the west, and High Prairie from the east, approximately 340 km northwest of Edmonton. The Nation is nestled on the south shore of Lesser Slave Lake. As the second-largest lake entirely within the Alberta boundaries, Lesser Slave Lake is a stunning destination for birders and wildlife enthusiasts. We are signatory to Treaty 8 and a member of the Lesser Slave Lake Indian Council and as stewards of the land, we will ensure that the best sustainable practices are followed, now and in the future. As a dynamic and vibrant community, DCN strives to continue to develop with the support of our management, Chief and Council and from the contributions of our Nation members. We are dedicated to delivering services that continually improve the community through improvements in social programs and infrastructure projects.

POSITION OVERVIEW: Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), the Community Development and Safety Services (CDSS) will actively oversee and lead the community engagement and safety team of Driftpile Cree Nation. This individual should be capable of managing a budget, have a deep understanding and respect for Indigenous tradition and culture, and preferably be a fluent speaker of the Cree language.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Community Support

1. Identify key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics that can be used to measure the level of engagement with the Driftpile Cree Nation community.
2. Manage the Community Support team members and provide coaching for continued growth and development of staff.
3. Assist the team in creating and providing empathetic, supportive, open-minded, and non-judgmental communication, coordination and support to the community.
4. Develop community-based strategies to ensure members and community are engaged, informed, supported and have access to services.

Community Safety

1. Provides leadership in managing the Nation's public safety operations such as fire, security, and emergency response departments.
2. Work alongside with the Emergency Management Coordinator to develop and implement community programs and tools.
3. Evaluates programs for deficiencies and accomplishments and uses this information to measure performance and further develop service delivery.

Other

1. Develop press releases and media communications. Manage media tools and spaces.
2. Effectively manage a multi-stream budget and prioritize initiatives around funds available.
3. Develop strategic plans and assist in implementation of changes in staffing, operating procedures, and work processes designed to improve the administration of programs, increase operational efficiencies and accomplishments.
4. Present a positive and professional image of the office of the DCN Chief to all visitors, staff, government officials, inquiries, and other interactions.
5. Fully comply with all DCN policies, procedures, health safety, and PPE protocols including the fitness for duty policy stipulating zero-tolerance for being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
6. May be required to work evenings, weekends, and travel as needed.
7. Performs other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. At least 2 years of experience in either a community engagement or safety manager role.
2. University/College education in Human Services, Business Administration, Emergency Services Management or a related field would be considered an asset.
3. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
4. Strong written and verbal skills with the ability to multi-task and prioritize.
5. Proficient use of computers including Microsoft, Excel, email and various database programs.
6. Comprehensive knowledge of First Nations people, values, and culture.
7. Demonstrate professionalism and ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
8. Valid license, dependable vehicle and valid insurance are mandatory.
9. Fluency in Cree is considered an asset.
10. Criminal, Vulnerable and Child Welfare Intervention record checks will be required at time of interview.
