2025-02-27) Northern Spotted Owl Field Technicians

This position is based out of Squamish, BC and applicants are fully responsible for any relocation and accommodation required to be available in that area. Please outline your ability to be based out of Squamish or the surrounding area (Pemberton, Whistler, North Vancouver, Surrey, Langley, Chilliwack, Hope, etc.) in your application. Preference is given to local applicants.
Duties Include:
1. Call play-back inventories and ARU (Autonomous Recording Units) placement and retrieval for both Spotted and Barred Owls conducted in forests across the range of the Northern Spotted Owl.
2. ARU deployment and data retrieval is done during the day.
3. Capture/Banding/Radio-Telemetry: The position may require capture of Barred Owls and Spotted Owls. Any captured Spotted and Barred Owls are fitted with a USFW metal lock band as well as color bands for future ID. Currently, backpack-style radios and/or GPS beacons are attached to captured Spotted and Barred Owls. Hands-on training in banding and backing will be provided if necessary. Spotted Owls with very high frequency (VHF) radio tags will be tracked for checks on the individual. Tracking involves off-trail hiking to find the individual using the wildlife radio telemetry signal sent by the VHF radio.
4. Field Work: Field shifts typically last 9-10 days and require camping at field sites. Stipend for gear and food is provided for all field days. Day work and night work may occur within the same 9-10 day field shift.
5. Work will begin in early April through to the end of October.
6. Candidates must be familiar with the physical demands of working in Coastal Mountains. Please provide detailed examples of past experience working in challenging conditions and hiking in these areas.
Essential Qualifications:
- Applicants must be legally eligible for work in Canada.
- Applicants must have a bachelor's degree or diploma related to fields in biology, zoology, conservation, and/or forestry.
- Applicants must have previous backcountry experience and related field gear.
- Applicants must be physically fit, capable of lifting 50 lbs and comfortable hiking 15 km on and off road, and be prepared to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Applicants must be willing to work a varied schedule that includes evening shifts and be available to work 7 days a week (10 day shift Tuesday – Thursday of the following week).
- Applicants must possess a valid driver's license.
Asset Qualifications:
- Biology work experience in the conservation of threatened and/or endangered species.
- Bird handling and banding skills.
- Experience working with ARUs.
- Experience working outdoors in a variety of conditions including off-trail navigation.
- Experience tracking wildlife with telemetry.
- Competency in using Excel and Word.
- Valid First Aid certification.
