Position Overview:
Reporting to the Project Manager(s), the Contract RPAS Pilot will perform drone piloting services according to the job description below.
The Contract RPAS Pilot position is not a full-time position nor a guarantee of work. Contractors will be employed on an as-needed basis to conduct drone piloting work.
Service Description:
Successful applicants will be required to perform the following tasks:
Daily Duties

- Provide RPAS Infrared Detection Services to assist in the detection, containment,and extinguishing of wildfires in various regions of British Columbia.
- Use RPAS infrared technology to locate hotspots, detect fire perimeter breaches, and provide fire pattern and perimeter mapping to the wildfire dispatch personnel in a timely manner in the formats specified in the Service Request.
- Drive in company vehicles to all regions of British Columbia to undertake RPAS Infrared Detection Services for up to 14-day deployments.
- Remain in remote deployment locations with limited communication for the duration of the deployment.
- Conduct RPAS piloting activities at night for up to 12 hours per shift.
- Work alongside one other crewmember for the duration of the deployment.
- Be high-endurance, capable of peak physical and mental performance in a challenging work setting for up to 14 consecutive days.
- Remain calm and collected in high-stress emergency situations.
- Acknowledge and accept the risks inherent to travelling and working near active wildfires with abundant ash, smoke, and flames as part of the job requirements.
- Acknowledge and accept risks inherent to working in remote locations as part of the job requirements.
- Be safety-conscious; know the acceptable limits of risk and stand down when conditions prove too hazardous to operate.
- Wear the provided fire-retardant personal protective equipment while on shift.
- Complete mandatory wildfire, RPAS, and other related training programs for duty on active wildfires.
- Attend daily operations meetings virtually and face-to-face as required.
- Provide legible daily time reports upon check-in with wildfire dispatch personnel.
- Conduct daily safety check-ins with support staff and wildfire dispatch personnel.
- Collect detailed and accurate daily observations of all field activities including field-level hazard assessments and pre-flight checklists.
- Communicate with project stakeholders in a timely, clear, and professional manner as ambassador to the Candrone.
- Manage large amounts of data in a timely and organized manner.
- Maintain field equipment, taking care to avoid costly damages and losses.
- Take initiative to report any damaged or lost equipment

Additional Duties

- Provide prescribed fire and pile burning assistance by detecting hotspots and/or perimeter
- breaches if required.
- Assist in natural hazard response by providing reconnaissance.
- Provide real-time digital mapping products that may assist incident personnel in making
- informed decisions during natural hazard response.
- Assist incident management teams with scanning, detecting, and scouting large areas
- quickly and identifying hazards to first responders, the public, and/or infrastructure managers.
- Provide additional intelligence gathering as directed by Candrone based on the needs of the incident.
- Assist in search and rescue operations during earthquakes and other emergencies if required.

Deployment Logistics:

- The contractor will be prepared to work multi-day deployments of 1-14 days consisting of 12-hour shifts at active wildfires locations.
- The contractor should expect difficult nighttime drone piloting and/or visual observing duties along with battery management, data management, gear maintenance, and field documentation duties as part of their typical shift.
- Firefighting duties in addition to drone piloting may be required of contractors on occasion.
- The contractor must ensure they have sufficient meals for a 12-hour shift in remote locations each day.
- After 14 days on deployment, a rest period of at least 3 days between deployments is mandatory.
- Deployments may begin either from Greater Vancouver or elsewhere, depending on a contractor’s point of origin in British Columbia.
- Deployments begin with response to Service Requests where the contractor indicates their availability for the coming days or weeks. Availability must be provided by the contractor to Candrone within 30 minutes of a callout.
- Candrone cannot make a guarantee of deployment to a Service Request even with the contractor’s timely response to such request.
- Candrone has limited understanding of the frequency and duration of Service Requests—these details are at the sole discretion of client.

Job Requirements:

- Canadian Citizen or eligibility to work in Canada.
- Valid Transport Canada Advanced RPAS Drone Pilot’s License.
- Minimum 1 year drone piloting experience
- Resident of British Columbia.
- Ability to drive a rental vehicle with no restrictions. This includes being 25+ years of age with a valid class 5 driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Basic computer and online software skills—Microsoft OneDrive, Outlook, and Teams, Google Earth, Google Maps, QGIS, ArcGIS, WhatsApp, Asana, Nav Drone, Avenza, Garmin, and Safety Culture all considered an asset.
- Experience with GPS navigation in remote regions.
- Ability to lift to 50 lb. loads multiple times daily.
- Flexible schedule to meet the ongoing needs of the contract.

Preferred experiences and training include the following.

- Experience with unsupervised work.
- Experience travelling long distances for extended time as part of work duties.
- Work experience in high-stress environments while meeting hard deadlines.
- Experience with thermal imaging cameras.
- Background/training in public safety; paramedic, firefighter, police, Canadian Coastguard, search and rescue, and Canadian Armed Forces experience are all considered a strong asset.
- ROC - A (Restricted Operator Certificate) Radio license and First Aid with transportation endorsement.
- SAFE Certification with BC Forest Safety Council.
