The Program Director, Family Medicine PGY3 Enhanced Skills – Sport and Exercise Medicine (FM PGY3 ES/SEM) reports to the Family Medicine Enhanced Skills (FM ES) Residency Program Director for academic and strategic matters, and to the Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME), for financial matters and for non-academic policy.

Responsibilities

Summary of Functions

In conjunction with the Family Medicine Residency Program Director, the Program Director, PGY3 Family Medicine/Sport and Exercise Medicine (FM PGY3 ES/SEM) is responsible for the development, ongoing planning, promotion, implementation, assessment, and evaluation of the PGY3 Family Medicine Sport and Exercise Medicine Program while carefully adhering to the Residency Training Profile related to this Certificate of Added Competency (CAC), CFPC accreditation standards and for supporting the work of the NOSM University (NOSM U).

Educational Responsibilities

- Provide direction for all aspects of the NOSM U, FM PGY3 ES/SEM residency program to ensure that it meets the accreditation standards of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC):

- Plan, organize and supervise the NOSM U, FM PGY3 ES/SEM residency program

- Implement and adhere to the competencies outlined in the CFPC Residency Training Profile – Sport and Exercise Medicine

- Ensure the program provides opportunities for residents to attain all the competencies required by the CFPC and acquire the Certificate of Added Competence (CAC) special designation as CCFP (SEM) / MCFP (SEM)

- Develop additional experiences and partnerships to ensure program distribution across all northern Ontario

- Ensure a fair and transparent selection process for candidates applying to the program

- Implement an effective resident assessment and promotion process in accordance with the CFPC assessment principles and the NOSM U Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) policies

- Develop and implement personal learning plans, enhanced learning plans, and remediation plans for residents in difficulty, as necessary

- Maintain an appeal mechanism consistent with NOSM U PGME policies

- Ensure appropriate support for residents including safety, career counselling, stress management and availability of other resources for resident well-being, as needed

- Ensure the continuous quality improvement of the FM PGY3 ES/SEM residency program including educational objectives, research curriculum, academic sessions, and clinical curriculum consistent with the requirements of the CFPC and NOSM U

- Employ a continuous quality improvement approach to resident placements, other educational experiences, and program development, so that residents are prepared to begin practice, in communities in Canada including northern and rural areas

- Coordinate the recruitment of faculty for teaching and make recommendations for academic appointments in collaboration with Associate Dean, PGME, and other academic/administrative leaders at NOSM U

- Work to enhance faculty support, development, evaluation, and feedback to improve the commitment and retention of NOSM U faculty

- Participate in planning the resident and faculty learning events

- Continuously reviews accreditation standards and assess the program's performance for all standards

- Prepare for and participate in internal reviews, external reviews, and accreditation of NOSM U residency programs

- Engages in regular review of the clinical and non-clinical activities of the program, at all sites/streams

- Engages in continuous quality improvement for both clinical and non-clinical curriculum activities

- Promotes a culture of positive, progressive, and continuous quality improvement in all program activities

Administrative Responsibilities

- Responsible for the assessment and overall supervision of all clinical faculty leadership positions within the NOSM U FM PGY3 ES/SEM residency program

- Chair the FM PGY3 ES/SEM Residency Program Committee (FM/SEM RPC) and serve as member on RPC sub-committees and working groups as required (e.g., Competence Committee, Recruitment and Selection Subcommittee, etc.)

- Attend the Family Medicine Enhanced Skills Residency Program Committee (ES RPC) meetings

- Facilitate communication among preceptors, programs and residents through committees, subcommittees, working groups and/or other mechanisms for the purposes of planning, coordinating, and overseeing respective components of the program

- Participate in required postgraduate NOSM U, and CFPC committees, as identified by the Program Director, Enhanced Skills, or designate and provide such reports as may be required from time to time

- Liaise with people and groups essential to the NOSM U FM/SEM residency program such as:

- NOSM U Program Director(s)

- NOSM Postgraduate Medical Education Manager

- NOSM Wellness Office

- CFPC Committees, as needed

- Other FM/SEM Program Director(s) across Ontario and Canada

- When required, acts as a delegate of the Family Medicine Program Director at the Postgraduate Education Committee

- Fulfill other such duties as may be assigned

Qualifications

Education

- A family physician, licensed in Ontario, practicing in Northern Ontario, with certification from the CFPC (or equivalent as determined by the Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education)

- CCFP (SEM) designation is an asset

- A current faculty appointment (or eligibility for same) with NOSM U

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

- Three (3) years recent clinical practice experience is an asset

- Three (3) years recent experience as a preceptor is an asset

- Additional training in health professions/medical education is an asset

- Experience in program leadership role an asset

- Knowledge of the Family Medicine curriculum and accreditation standards of the CFPC and the Certificate of Added Competence (CAC) special designation as CCFP (SEM) / MCFP (SEM)

- Commitment to development and improvement of medical education in Northern Ontario

- Substantial knowledge of, and exposure to, the issues faced by distributed, northern, and rural medical education

- Significant experience in clinical practice and academic sectors and intricate knowledge of key stakeholders in NOSM U training sites and other universities

- Self-motivated and directed

- Superior interpersonal, communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills

- Resident advocacy skills and interest

- Preference will be given to NOSM U faculty residing in Northern Ontario

Language

- Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)

- French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset

Remuneration

- As per the stipendiary faculty remuneration process

Time Commitment

- One-half (0.5) day per month when there are no learners enrolled in the program for the given academic year

- One and one-half (1.5) days per month when there are learners enrolled in the program for the given academic year
