Reporting
The Sault Ste. Marie Stream Assistant Site Director for the NOSM University (NOSM U) Family Medicine residency program reports to the Program Director, Family Medicine, or designate.
Responsibilities
Summary of Functions
In collaboration with Family Medicine Program Director, the other Stream Site Directors, and the Sault Ste. Marie Stream Faculty and/or Competency Coaches, providing direction for all aspects of education for the Sault Ste. Marie Stream residents including:
- Planning, development and promotion of residency education including competencies, objectives, outcomes, curriculum and assessment consistent with the accreditation standards of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) and with the mission and values of NOSM U.
- Working in collaboration with the site administrative coordinator (SAC) or other administrative personnel to ensure a practical orientation and a welcoming positive environment for learners.
- Ensuring that learners are well prepared for practice in northern, rural and remote communities.
- Participating in overall program assessment and evaluation such as annual quality improvement.
- Contributing to the recruitment and development of clinical academic sites across Northern Ontario.
Specific Responsibilities
Collaborates with the other stream Site Director(s) and the Sault Ste. Marie Stream Site Director in the following tasks and responsibilities:
Administration
- Selection of residents to the stream/program.
- Acts as a dossier reviewer and/or attends residency interview days.
- Represents and/or attends as the stream delegate to:
- Residency Program Committee (RPC)
- Annual face-to-face RPC retreat
- Resident Assessment Committee
- Academics Curriculum Committee
- Any other program committees as required.
- Maintains regular contact with designated residents by phone or email to discuss strategies to improve learning, teaching and the learning environment in the rural communities.
- Visits active teaching sites at the request of the Program Director.
Academic
Assists with the following:
- Overseeing the clinical experiences of rural residents to ensure all objectives and competencies can be achieved.
- Scheduling of resident rotations, in collaboration with the SAC and the LEG administrator.
- Ensuring appropriate assessment of residents in line with the program requirements.
- Ensuring that each Sault Ste. Marie resident has an identified Competency Coach.
- Identifying and securing resources required for the delivery of the curriculum.
- Maintaining regular communication with clinical teachers and Competency Coaches.
- Ensuring the provision of safe learning/teaching, research and clinical environments for learners, staff and faculty.
Qualifications
Education
- Doctor of Medicine degree.
- Certification in Family Medicine (CCFP).
- Possession of a current license to practice medicine in the province of Ontario.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Holds (or is eligible for) a faculty appointment with NOSM U.
- Several years of involvement in postgraduate education is an asset.
- Experience in the administration of postgraduate residency programs is an asset.
Language
- Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension).
- French/Indigenous language skills would be considered an asset.
Remuneration
- As per the stipendiary faculty remuneration process.
Time Commitment
- One and one-half (1.5) days per month.
