Position Overview

Provide a full range of legal services in relation to real estate and development law matters, including drafting standard and complex agreements relating to residential, commercial, and industrial land development (such as reciprocal easements and cost sharing agreements, land exchanges, stratified title, Development Charge deferral and pre-payment, and parkland agreements). Handle real estate legal matters for the Corporation, including preparation and review of agreements of purchase and sale, leases, licenses and other land related agreements.

Qualifications and Experience

1. Successful completion of a University Degree in Law (L.L.B) or Juris Doctor Degree (J.D.)
2. Minimum of two (2) years of progressive law experience in real estate and development law
3. Member of the Law Society of Ontario in good standing.
4. Exceptional organizational, facilitation, and interpersonal skills coupled with the ability to multi-task effectively while contending with conflicting demands and timelines.
5. Reviews and drafts contracts, and represents the City in negotiations on various real estate related agreements as applicable.
6. Works closely with the Real Estate Department in implementing the City's real estate strategies.
7. Works closely with the Development Engineering Department on establishing and implementing an effective regime in completing land development related agreements to support growth in the City.
8. Provides advice on planning and development matters under the Planning Act, the Development Charges Act and other applicable legislation as they relate to land development (e.g. Parkland Dedication, applicability and imposition of Development Charges).
9. Demonstrated political acumen and ability to negotiate, facilitate, mediate and present information to a varied audience.
10. Strong analytical, problem-solving, research and decision-making skills coupled with exceptional written and oral communication skills.
11. Well-developed ability to interpret, anticipate and convey highly complex, technical and abstract information.
12. Knowledge of, and demonstrated ability in, the city's core competencies and relevant functional competencies.
13. Possesses a valid Ontario 'G' Driver's License in good standing, with access to a reliable vehicle for corporate use.
14. Ability to work outside normal business hours, as required.
15. Knowledge of MS Office and common software programs to produce accessible documents, presentations and materials in compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) is a requirement of the job.
