Compensation
Compensation would be administered in accordance with the licensing requirements and the terms of the collective agreement. Union dues payable after thirty (30) consecutive calendar days. Operator will receive step 1 for less than one year of service, step 2 for more than one but less than two years of service, and step 3 for more than 2 years of service.
- Step 1 - 90% - $30.65
- Step 2 - 95% - $32.36
- Step 3 - 100% - $34.06
Qualifications
- High school Diploma plus specialized courses in a related field such as Horticulture, Turf Management, Outdoor Facility Management or related field.
- Three (3) to four (4) years experience in grounds maintenance, equipment operation, sport field maintenance, turf and/or landscape experience required; small engine or heavy equipment repair, building repair would be an asset.
- Possession of, or willingness to obtain weed control licenses, horticulture certification, playground equipment certification, boater safety and other related certificates.
- Health and Safety training, including WHMIS and First Aid/CPR required.
- Knowledge of boat and water safety regulations preferred.
- Verbal communication skills including courtesy, tact and explanation.
- Interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Organizational and time management skills.
- Adaptable, hard-working and co-operative work skills.
- Detail oriented.
- Independent worker with demonstrated initiative.
- Computer skills including Email, Word and Excel software.
- Membership or eligibility for membership with the Ontario Parks Association, Sports Turf Association, or related organization would be an asset.
- Regular work outdoors with exposure to extreme weather conditions.
- Heavy physical labour involving lifting, pushing and pulling of weight up to and sometimes over 40Kg.
- May require being on-call and performing after hours work.
Responsibilities
- Provide grounds and landscape maintenance services (and construction as may be required) in municipality owned parks and lands including but not limited to trees, shrubs, hedges, grass, gardens (e.g. horticulture, arboriculture).
- Provide maintenance and repair services to signs, parking lots, sports field turf and grounds (diamond and pitches), splash pads, washrooms; construct and maintain walking trails (e.g. waterfront trail) and outdoor skating rinks; repair and inspect playground equipment; install and repair fences; install and maintain watering and irrigation systems.
- Provide maintenance services on the waterfront facilities and adjacent parks, playground structure, beach, fish cleaning station, washroom and shower facilities, garbage pick-up and facility housekeeping.
- Provide building and structural repair/maintenance services such as painting, plumbing, minor structural repairs for buildings, e.g. storage building, workshop, fish cleaning station, canteens and Marina.
- Safely operate grounds maintenance equipment such as lawn mowers, handheld equipment (e.g. weed trimmer, hedge trimmer, chainsaw) and vehicular equipment (e.g. loader, truck, tractor).
- Provide repair and maintenance services for small engine equipment (gas and diesel); winter maintenance including oil changes, cleaning, greasing internal and external parts, rings, valves, fuel injectors etc., summer maintenance repairs as required e.g. blades; maintain records on all equipment repairs and scheduled maintenance. Provide repair and preventative maintenance services for the vehicles and heavy equipment (dump truck, snow plow, loader).
- Conduct inspections and prepare reports on vehicles, equipment and playground structures.
- Liaise with Special Events Coordinators and set up for events i.e. Float your Fanny down the Ganny and Canada Day.
- Provide oversight and training of seasonal and summer student employees; provide staff performance feedback to the Supervisor on a timely basis; ensure safe and efficient operation of equipment by co-workers.
- Perform task assignments to support other divisions within Parks, Recreation and Culture department.
- Demonstrate knowledge and ensure proper handling of equipment and chemicals as outlined under municipal policies and procedures as well as the Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS).
- Comply with all Health and Safety regulations, procedures and security measures while undertaking their duties and ensure the public are aware of guidelines where infractions are observed or as required to follow emergency procedures.
- Provide customer service to the public and demonstrate commitment to the delivery of customer service excellence; interact with the public in a respectful, courteous, informative, appropriate, and prompt manner. Provide information regarding services, directions, promotion of events and redirect to other services as appropriate. Support Municipal policy, procedures and by-laws in your actions and communications.
- Adhere to high standards of ethical behaviour and demonstrate their understanding that their personal actions impact the public's perception of the Municipality.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor, Parks or designate.
