The Accessibility Coordinator works with learners with disabilities to facilitate their ability to access and fully participate in programs and services offered at the various College Campuses and Centres and acts as an expert resource to the College community. The Coordinator also liaises with faculty and staff on issues relevant to student success, participates in College life, engages in professional development activities and maintains positive relationships with colleagues and other members of the College staff.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

- Works with learners requiring special support by:

- Contacting learners requiring support and/or accommodations at the College Campuses and Centres based on their disclosure of a disability either on the college application form, the CRT background questions, through direct contact initiated by the student, or through referral by an instructor or an outside agency or person

- Assessing the individual educational support needs of students with disabilities by interpreting documentation such as Psycho-educational reports prepared by a Registered Psychologist or other medical documentation of disability;

- Providing a variety of services to support the educational goals of students with documented disabilities;

- Facilitating learners’ access to programs and courses;

- Performs case management of individual students with documented disabilities by:

- Interviewing students;

- Reviewing medical documentation (including psycho-educational assessments);

- Determining and facilitating reasonable academic accommodations and supports; and

- Reviewing educational plans/goals and students’ educational progress towards achieving these, with students and College faculty and staff (as appropriate) and providing support and advice.

- Liaising with internal and external service providers and faculty by:

- Working collaboratively with faculty and staff in implementing reasonable academic accommodations and supports for students with disabilities utilizing a proactive, team-based approach.

- Providing referrals to appropriate internal and external service providers, such as counseling, financial aid and government services;

- Facilitating the transition of students with disabilities who are entering or leaving Selkirk College by collaborating with external agencies and schools,

- Developing and providing workshops, materials, and information to staff, instructors, and external stakeholders;

- Writing annual reports to the College;

- Liaising with external agencies and Ministry staff;

- Scheduling, coordinating and supervising interpreters and other professional service providers required for students; and

- Advising instructional staff on how best to support students with disabilities in the classroom.

- Actively contributes to the College and the Department by:

- Participating in the Student Access and Support department planning activities and contributing towards the achievement of the Department goals and objectives;

- Participating in departmental meetings;

- Contributing to selected committees or task forces; and

- Participating in College events such as graduation, the Selkirk Experience, high school or community outreach activities, and other such events as may be necessary to provide current and prospective students, and the general public, with knowledge and a clear understanding of the supports available to students with disabilities at Selkirk College and how to access them.

- Maintains positive relationships with colleagues and other members of the College staff by:

- Utilizing a collaborative team-based approach to supporting students with disabilities at Selkirk College

- Developing positive relationships with College faculty, staff and other professionals;

- Being a positive and active participant in departmental responsibilities;

- Providing support and cooperative assistance to fellow professionals and College staff; and

- Acting with professionalism and integrity at all times.

- Engages in professional development activities by:

- Selecting relevant discipline-related activities to remain current in the field;

- Taking courses or workshops to explore new and innovative approaches to supporting students with disabilities;

- Maintaining awareness of current disability management theory and legislative trends;

- Maintaining professional organization memberships appropriate for the position;

- Networking with colleagues; and

- Assisting in the delivery of professional development activities to the College, the Community and to industry.

- Protects student information by:

- Ensuring that required records are kept and provided as required by College procedure and policy; and

- Maintaining confidentiality and security of student information and other records.

- Performs other duties as assigned by the Department Head or the Director

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

- Knowledge of guidelines, regulations, procedures and policies governing the provision of support services to persons with disabilities

- Ability to relate to diverse learners

- Ability to conduct interviews and counsel learners

- Ability to interpret psycho-educational assessments and other medical documentation of disability

- Knowledge of adaptive technology, equipment and compensatory learning strategies.

- Ability to develop and present workshops and seminars

- Strong communication skills, verbal and written.

- Effective organizational and time management skills.

- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

- Ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external professionals.

- Ability to develop, recommend and implement new strategies, policies, and procedures.

- Ability to interpret and apply College, government, agency and department policies, procedures and guidelines.

- Ability to respond and deal effectively with change and crisis situations.

- Ability to use tact and discretion to deal with or settle complex requests.

- Awareness of current legislative trends regarding the “duty to accommodate”

- Ability to contribute to School and/or College initiatives

- A strong commitment to student success.

- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both orally and in writing), as well as strong teamwork and negotiation skills

- Strong organizational skills and strong abilities to prioritize work

Education and Experience

- Master's degree in Special Education, Rehabilitation, Psychology, Counseling, Social Work or relevant field, preferably with some course work related to special needs and disabilities.

- Two to four years direct experience in providing educational support services to adults with disabilities, preferably in a post-secondary setting.

- Strong demonstrated skills and experience in the area of interpretation of Psycho-educational Assessments and other medical documentation of disability

- Strong working knowledge of a wide variety of disabilities along with their appropriate accommodations in an educational setting, as well as an awareness of current legislative trends regarding “the duty to accommodate”

- Familiarity with the post-secondary system as well as teaching and/or Counseling experience, would be significant assets

This is a regular, part-time (50%) position, commencing as soon as possible. Salary and Benefits are in accordance with the SCFA Collective Agreement. The salary range is $2,709.12 - $4,341.23 bi-weekly (at 100% appointment) and is based on qualifications and experience. Preference will be given to SCFA members who are on layoff status and eligible for recall, as outlined in Articles 5.6 and 5.9 of the SCFA Collective Agreement.
