About the Workers’ Compensation Board of Nova Scotia

The Workers’ Compensation Board of Nova Scotia (WCB) is the province’s provider of workplace injury insurance. We inform and inspire Nova Scotians in the prevention of workplace injury. If injury occurs, we support those whose lives it touches with compassionate, trauma-informed practices, championing a timely return to safe and healthy work. We also provide caring, compassionate support in the wake of workplace tragedy. Our employees describe the culture as Collaborative, Evolving, Service-Minded, and Team-Focused.

About the Role

It’s an exciting time to work for the WCB as they undergo a significant business transformation and continue to evolve their service to better meet the needs of those they serve. Case Managers in Psychological Injury are responsible for a broad range of responsibilities, including conducting sensitive, trauma-informed assessments of each worker’s unique situation; administering the provisions of the Workers’ Compensation Act; and exercising leadership in the development of a safe, client-centered, goal-oriented return-to-work plan. Case Managers in Psychological Injury liaise with employers, health-care providers, unions, mental health professionals, and other service providers to ensure access to appropriate medical, psychological, and vocational rehabilitation services. This includes recognizing the impact of trauma, stress, and psychological injury on engagement, recovery, and work capacity, and adapting your approach to build trust and safety.

Key responsibilities also include:

- Managing assigned caseloads in a supportive, empathetic manner,

- Adhering to best-practice procedures for return-to-work,

- Authorizing services and benefits, such as earnings-replacement, medical aid, psychological treatment supports, and vocational rehabilitation,

- Assessing entitlement to wage-loss benefits upon completion of active intervention.

Case Managers coordinate and/or provide a full range of vocational rehabilitation services—such as job search support, negotiating wage subsidies, developing alternative employment opportunities, and maintaining oversight of vocational rehabilitation programming. As a Case Manager in Psychological Injury, a trauma-informed approach is essential, including awareness of how trauma histories, psychological conditions, and stress may influence a worker’s participation, communication, and progress.

Your Experience & Skills

As an ideal candidate, you will thrive by demonstrating strong capability in the following competencies: Managing Risks, Analytical Thinking, Communication, Return to Work, Clinical Assessment Comprehension and Application, Problem-Solving, Relationship Management, Decision Making, Vocational Rehabilitation, Case Coordination, and Act Interpretation & Application.

You bring a trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and person-centered approach. You understand how trauma, psychological injury, stress, and mental health conditions can influence coping, decision-making, workplace functioning, and recovery.

You embrace a Return-to-Work philosophy that recognizes work as a healthy and restorative part of recovery for individuals with psychological injuries. You believe that, with the right supports and accommodations, people can safely return to work, and that work contributes positively to mental health, recovery, and long-term well-being.

You are experienced in:

- Applying trauma-informed communication strategies that promote emotional safety, trust, empowerment, and choice, while proactively guiding and supporting next steps toward recovery and a safe, sustainable return to work.

- Reviewing psychological and mental health documentation from clinicians to understand treatment progress and functional impacts related to conditions such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD.

- Identifying potential barriers and determining appropriate next steps that support recovery and proactive movement toward a safe and sustainable return to work.

- Coordinating evidence-based mental health treatment;

- Maintaining a compassionate, regulated presence when working with individuals who may be distressed, overwhelmed, or experiencing trauma symptoms.

You will be personable, grounded, and energetic, thriving in a fast-paced, people-centered environment. You will be comfortable delivering presentations, mentoring, and coaching others on trauma-informed and recovery-oriented practices, while remaining open to continuous improvement to enhance service delivery and outcomes.

- A university degree in health care, education, or social sciences

- 4 years of experience performing medium or complex case management, including experience supporting individuals with mental health conditions or psychological injuries using trauma-informed practices

- An equivalent combination of education and significant case management experience may be considered

- Valid driver’s license and daily access to a reliable vehicle

Perks of Joining Our Team

- Ongoing professional development opportunities, including trauma-informed training

- Employee Referral Program

- A passionate team and a supportive work environment
