Team Grant: Health Effects of Ultra‑Processed Foods

Principal sponsor: CIHR Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes (INMD) in collaboration with the Institute of Aging (IA), Cancer Research (ICR), Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH), Human Development, Child and Youth Health (IHDCYH), Infection and Immunity (III) and Population and Public Health (IPPH); partner: Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada.

Funding Pools & Allocation

- Mechanisms of Health Effects of UPFs Pool – $3,000,000 (Full Application)

- Health Effects of UPFs on Older Persons Pool – $1,000,000

- Biological Mechanisms of UPFs & Cardiovascular Disease Pool – $1,000,000

- Health Effects of UPFs in Human Development, Child and Youth Health Pool – $1,000,000

- Structural Determinants of UPFs Pool – $1,000,000

Funding Amount

Total available: $7,560,000 (16 LOIs and 7 Team Grants). LOI stage: $160,000 for 16 LOIs (up to $10,000 each). Full Application stage: $7,400,000 for 7 grants ($250,000 per year, up to 4 years).

Research Areas & Eligibility

- Mechanisms of Health Effects of UPFs (including microbiome, immune/metabolic pathways)

- Health Effects of UPFs on Older Persons (tissue injury, frailty, cognitive decline)

- Biological Mechanisms of UPFs & Cardiovascular Disease (early life to adult stages)

- Human Development, Child & Youth Health (effects from preconception to youth)

- Structural Determinants of UPFs (policy, regulation, inequitable impacts)

Key Requirements

- Nominated Principal Applicant: independent researcher affiliated with a Canadian postsecondary institution.

- Maximum of four Principal Applicants (including NPA).

- All PAs must have completed a Sex and Gender Training Module by application deadline.

- Must include at least one Early Career Researcher (ECR); for Indigenous populations, include at least one Indigenous applicant.

- Applicant teams must be interdisciplinary with EDI considerations integrated.

- Data Management Plan (DMP) and Biosample Governance Plan required; must align with FAIR principles.

Funding Exclusions

- Research solely focused on nutrients highly associated with NCDs (high fat, salt, sugar).

- Research solely focused on excess energy intake.
