Job Profile

The Shelter Supervisor is primarily responsible for the supervision and support of programming at the Richmond Hill Shelter to meet the needs of the women and children accessing the shelter. This includes staff scheduling and supervision, supporting shelter operations, overseeing the relief portfolio, and Community Programs staff while ensuring the health and safety of the shelter and case management. This position reports to the Manager of Programs. Sandgate Women's Shelter of York Region Inc. works within a harm reduction, feminist, and intersectional framework following the vision, mission, and guiding principles of the agency.

Roles and Responsibilities

A. Staff Supervision

- Participate in the hiring of staff.
- Supervise staff, relief staff, students, and volunteers to ensure the mandate of the program is carried out.
- Ensure all staff, students, and volunteers are aware of agency policies and procedures, providing coaching and informal performance management as needed.
- Review staff communication logs and documentation daily to ensure accuracy.
- Supervise maintenance of the shelter.
- Address issues as they arise and inform the Manager of Programs of any recurring or major issues in staff performance.
- Oversee relief portfolio and conduct regular supervision of relief staff.
- Conduct regular supervision, training, and support to placement students and volunteers.
- Coordinate and co-facilitate team meetings.
- Create and maintain a staff team approach that values diversity and integration of perspectives.
- Provide or coordinate orientation, training, and professional development for direct reports.
- Maintain monthly communication with the relief team.

B. Provision of Shelter Services

- Adhere to the philosophy, mission, vision, and values of Sandgate.
- Support all elements of Richmond Hill's programs as per the Service Delivery Guide.
- Coordinate and facilitate case management and case conferences as required.
- Support Women's Advocate and Child and Youth Worker with client crises and conflict resolution.
- Handle crises in accordance with specified policies and procedures.
- Support the Manager of Programs with community resources.
- Support Shelter Supervisor at Jackson's Point with second-stage portfolio as needed.
- Oversee volunteer projects and initiatives at Richmond Hill Shelter.
- Participate as a member of the Management team.
- Participate in the program review and evaluation process.
- Participate in internal and/or external committees.
- Share on-call responsibilities.
- Complete documentation as needed.
- Ensure compliance with relevant legislation and standards.
- Oversee the maintenance of information and/or files.
- Fill shifts at respective shelters as needed.
- Check in with the Manager of Programs weekly.

C. Shelter Operations

- Ensure maintenance of purchasing and inventory control mechanisms.
- Supervise regular maintenance schedules.
- Ensure health and safety audits are conducted.
- Ensure appropriate security measures are in place.
- Support House Coordinator with general contractors and suppliers.
- Request and purchase items with pre-approval.
- Submit mileage and expense reports.
- Maintain comprehensive inventory and appropriate storage.
- Provide direct service as backup if required.

D. Other

- Participate in training to continuously improve skills.
- Maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job.
- Attend relevant meetings and events.
- Assume other relevant tasks as required.

Requisite Qualifications and Competencies

A. Qualifications

- Degree or diploma in a related discipline.
- 3-5 years of experience in a supervisory position, preferably in a Violence Against Women or Social Services agency.
- Strong interpersonal and supervisory skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work in a deadline-driven, team environment.
- Ability to work independently and as an effective team member.
- Demonstrated personal, organizational, and time management skills.
- Flexible schedule, particularly during peak times.
- Fluency in French is considered an asset.
- Ability to challenge current systems and resolve conflict.
- Ability to liaise effectively with the public and community resources.

Please note that Sandgate operates two shelters, and while this position is mainly located in Richmond Hill, travel to the North will be required periodically.
