You are a talented communications professional with a flair for storytelling, taking technical topics - like city building and zoning - and crafting them into interesting people-focused stories that help Edmontonians understand how the City’s work connects to their everyday lives.

The Communications Advisor is a member of the Urban Planning and Economy (UPE) Department’s communications, engagement and external relations team that provides integrated services to support the business goals of the department and the City.

Urban Planning and Economy is a forward-looking department that plans, promotes and advocates change that moves this city towards the Edmonton envisioned by the residents we serve. The department leads the way in how we plan for a future Edmonton along with supporting the companies and organizations that contribute to building our city. - Collaborate with colleagues in UPE to develop and implement compelling storytelling strategies that help share the Department’s work in helping build Edmonton
- Collaborate with other communications, engagement and external relations teams across the organization to support the business needs of the City of Edmonton relating to development
- Work with both internal and external support services, such as the storytelling team and marketing agencies, to help create effective and holistic narratives and tactics that impact goals for local, national and international coverage
- Use diverse communications tools and tactics, such as on-site video/photo captures and engaging posts for social media, to meet communications goals
- Perform other related duties as required

**Qualifications**:

- Degree in a communications, public relations, or related field, supplemented by a minimum of two (2) years progressively responsible experience in a designated public relations, public affairs, marketing or public information position OR diploma in a communications, public relations or related field, supplemented by a minimum of four (4) years progressively responsible experience in a designated public relations, public affairs or public information position
- Relationship-building skills with ability to identify and manage issues through a client consulting approach
- Knowledge and understanding of the principles of telling compelling people-centred stories
- Demonstrated skill in continually assessing the effectiveness of storytelling strategies to ensure they are achieving outcomes with an eye to adjusting, as necessary
- Experience in using communications tools and tactics, such as advertising, printing, graphic design, photography, traditional media, social media and web-based products
- Excellent writing skills to produce materials such as advertising copy, blogs and video scripts
- Experience in journalism or marketing is an asset
- Proficiency in Google Suite, including Google apps and Gmail is required

**Hours of Work**: 33.75 hours per week, Monday-Friday
The weekly hours of work for this position is currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
