We are looking for a Communications Advisor to join the Community Services Communications and Engagement team. This position will focus on providing strategic communications and marketing services to the Affordable Housing and Homelessness portfolio in the Community Services department.
The Community Services Department is committed to creating a safe, healthy and vibrant city. Affordable Housing and Homelessness leads coordinated action with partners to anticipate, recognize and respond to affordable housing and homelessness needs. These efforts improve the quality of life for individuals and families by increasing, maintaining and supporting safe, adequate and affordable housing in all areas of the city; and improving access to critical support services for those experiencing homelessness.
The Communications Advisor in this position will develop and implement communications and marketing strategies to raise awareness of the benefits of putting safe, clean, affordable housing within reach of more people in more neighbourhoods and providing communications support throughout that process. (Please note that assigned portfolios can change over time.) Duties include:
- Lead, develop, manage and implement integrated communication plans and marketing strategies and tactics for both external and internal audiences
- Identify emerging issues and provide timely advice and effective strategies in response to those issues
- Manage media relations, including organizing media events, coaching spokespeople and sometimes serving as a spokesperson
- Review Council reports, develop consistent messaging, liaise with counterparts in other orders of government or community
- Lead and support marketing, engagement and education initiatives as well as responses to resident inquiries
- Create engaging copy and visuals to be used for social media channels (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, etc.) to advance department goals
- Provide communications support to public engagement initiatives
- Write news releases, public service announcements, media advisories, brochures, newsletters and other communication products
- Edit, develop and update web and 311 content for programs, projects and initiatives
- Work with clients, designers, printers, vendors and marketing agencies to create effective communications and advertising products
- Perform other related duties as required
**Qualifications**:
- Degree in a communications, public relations, or related field, supplemented by a minimum of two (2) years progressively responsible experience in a designated public relations, public affairs or public information position OR Diploma in a communications, public relations or related field, supplemented by a minimum of four (4) years progressively responsible experience in a designated public relations, public affairs or public information position
- Proven experience with ability to successfully create, develop, implement and evaluate strategic communication plans
- Proven ability to excel in a complex, fast based and dynamic environment
- Demonstrated experience with high profile, highly sensitive and political files
- Superior written and verbal communication and presentation skills
- Demonstrated experience with traditional media relations, coaching spokespeople and acting as a spokesperson
- Relationship-building skills with ability to identify and manage issues through a client consulting approach
- Diverse community connections, including broad understanding of changing community diversity, anti-racism work and inclusionary needs, are an asset
- Experience related to project management and communicating with stakeholder groups
- Experience with advertising, print, graphic design, traditional media, social media and other web-based communications
- Proficiency in Google Suite, Google Applications and Gmail is an asset
