The University of Alberta is committed to supporting a healthy academic and work environment. Recognizing worrisome behaviour and responding with interest and concern are critical factors in preventing potential violence. Within the portfolio of the Vice-Provost Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, Helping Individuals at Risk (HIAR) provides a confidential centralized location where reports of worrisome behaviours can be made in order to connect situations that would otherwise seem to be isolated incidents, to assess the worrisome behaviours, and intervene with the individual at risk appropriately.

**Position**

Reporting to the Director, Helping Individuals at Risk Program, the HIAR Coordinator is one of three positions responsible for the assessment and management of reports of at risk behaviour from across the university under the University of Alberta’s Helping Individuals At Risk Policy and Procedure. The HIAR program emphasizes early intervention with the goal of helping individuals at risk before their behaviour escalates.

The HIAR Coordinator assesses the risk of the reported behaviours in order to prioritize cases, determine relevant safety measures, decide on appropriate resources, and provide advice and coaching on how to manage situations.

As reports to HIAR may be about students, staff, faculty members or postdoctoral fellows, the HIAR Coordinator utilizes in-depth knowledge of university policies and procedures, discipline processes, reporting options and resources for each type of individual at risk.

The HIAR Coordinator collaborates regularly with key stakeholders such as the Office of the Dean of Students, Human Resource Services, University of Alberta Protective Services, Residence Services, Student Services, University of Alberta International, Student Advisors, and Senior Administrators.

- Maintain confidentiality according to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) Act.
- Maintain accurate and confidential case records as per FOIP and HIAR protocols
- Participate in Case Team decisions and action plans
- Collaborate with the Director on strategies and activities that promote the Helping Individuals at Risk program to build awareness throughout the University community. This may include presentations, displays, and the development and distribution of promotional materials
