Why is this role important?
- The Data Analyst works as part of our analytic team to compile, verify and analyze data for indicators, and disseminate results to diverse audiences. The data analyst also helps define what the indicators will measure, contributes to analytical plans and literature reviews, supports migration and streamlines existing programming code, and helps with client requests.
- Note: This posting may be used to fill similar positions in the Health System Performance Branch. Departments within the Health System Performance branch include, Indicator Research and Development, Performance Improvement and Capacity-Building, Health Indicators and Client Support, Health System Performance Reporting, and Virtual Care Initiative.
- The Indicator Research and Development team develops indicators on many aspects of health system performance to promote quality improvement across Canada. This includes work that supports the Common Statement of Principles on Shared Health Priorities, which focuses on improving access to mental health and substance use services, and to home and community care.

- What you'll do
- 1. Does basic and advanced qualitative and quantitative analyses on data from administrative databases and other sources (e.g., surveys).
- 2. Supports the development of coding best practices and migration of existing analytic code to python language.
- 3. Identifies data sources for health system indicators, helps determine how indicators will be calculated and provides advice on data quality.
- 4. Understands CIHI’s databases, related data held by other organizations, and how to access these databases and related analyses.
- 5. Prepares presentations, technical documents and reports that will help stakeholders understand and use health system data, indicators and information to improve the performance of Canada’s health systems. This includes planning meetings with stakeholders.
- 6. Writes analytical reports, briefing notes, fact sheets and presentations. Develops figures and tables.
- 7. Provides methodological advice and mentoring to other members of the analytical team.
- What you'll bring to the table
- An undergraduate degree in epidemiology, statistics, health services research or similar fields. A graduate degree would be an asset.
- 3 - 5 years of experience analyzing large and complex data sets (of both administrative and survey data) and writing reports on the results. Specific experience with data on mental health and on home and community care would be an asset.
- Extensive knowledge of programming languages required; experience with R or Python would be an asset.
- Strong communication and writing skills. Specifically, the ability to write for a variety of audiences clearly and in an engaging way, as well as the ability to effectively communicate technical and analytical information.
- Strong organizational skills. Able to manage projects, including multiple projects at once. Able to work on a team and alone, and with mínimal supervision.
- Strong critical-thinking skills. Able to analyze and combine data and information to produce insights and knowledge that stakeholders can put into action.
- Fluency in English required; fluency in French would be an asset.
