**About the Organization**:
The Barrie Area Native Advisory Circle (BANAC) is a regional social planning and development organization which provides innovative programs and service to Indigenous communities in Simcoe County, Muskoka, and York Region, including wholistic Health Services through the Mamaway Wiidokdaadwin Primary Care Team. As an Interprofessional Health Care Team, Mamaway team members provide primary care, mental health, traditional healing and health promotion services for Indigenous communities. We provide wholistic services in clinic locations, community and in partnership with mainstream service partners.

**ROLE DESCRIPTION**:
Under the direct Supervision of the Seniors Cultural Worker and or designate, the Cultural Worker provides increased access to culture-based programs and service delivery to urban indigenous children, youth and families. This program is specifically targeted to improve and foster a strong sense of well being and a positive indigenous identity. The Cultural Worker will focus on cultural activities and promote Indigenous Culture and Traditions. This position coordinates and supports all aspects of cultural knowledge transfer and planning. The Cultural Worker will provide traditional teachings and ceremonies in a safe and acceptable environment and also coordinates access to Elders and Traditional people to meet the needs of the community: children, youth, and families as the primary audience. The Cultural Worker will also work to promote cultural awareness, safety, and competency within the community at large while promoting healing and reconciliation.

**ROLE RESPONSIBLITIES**:

- Coordinate traditional arts and crafting, land-based activities, and language restoration.
- Create and maintain a trusted traditional knowledge/ Elder resource directory with the goal of connecting with Elders and/or traditional resource people to conduct ceremonies as appropriate to the geographic areas and customs.
- Support the planning of traditional dancing, singing, drumming, community and/or seasonal celebrations/feasts, traditional and social events, plus an elder and youth knowledge exchange.
- Facilitate talking, teaching and healing circles, with a priority to services and supports for Indigenous children, youth and families.
- Acquire, maintain and care for education tools/resources on traditional knowledge with an emphasis on medicines and food teachings.
- Promote awareness and ensure access to the program through a variety of outreach efforts and promotional activities.
- To facilitate increased access to culture & cultural knowledge from a perspective that promotes healing
- To ensure safe transmission of cultural knowledge
- To foster connections to cultural knowledge and ways of being, both within BANAC and with the broader community from a perspective that promotes reconciliation

**WHAT YOU BRING**:

- Post-secondary education in Indigenous studies and/or combination of an equivalent and relevant education
- Previous experience working within the Indigenous community, combined with knowledge of Indigenous cultural safety and Indigenous cultural practices.
- Demonstrated work experience in the area of long-term care.
- Knowledge of mainstream Health Service Agencies and Programs

**Information About Working at BANAC**:

- Work is typically performed in clinic, office, and community settings.
- Regular travel to meetings and communities will be required - vehicle an asset.
- Regular overtime work may be required from time to time, BANAC team members enjoy a flex schedule agreement.
- Periodic exposure to smoke may occur from the burning of sacred medicines: Tobacco, sweet grass, sage, or cedar.

Specific employment conditions are specified in an employment contract with BANAC and include the following:

- Worksite location
- Valid C.P.R. and A.E.D. Certificates required.
- Valid Class G Ontario Driver’s License is required with clear check for vulnerable sector.
