John Howard Society of York Region (JHSYR) is a non-profit, charitable organization serving residents of York Region. The organization works with individuals involved in any stage of criminal justice involvement and their families.

The primary function of the Community Justice Worker will be to work with clients referred from York Regional Police who require support through the Adult Pre-Charge Diversion (APD) program, Newmarket and Bradford courthouses who require support through Direct Accountability Program (DAP), Counselling Services Intervention (CSI) and other JHSYR programming.

This position will also require providing support to adult individuals through our CSI program, referred through DAP which will include, but not limited to: receiving crisis support and referrals; obtaining assistance with housing and employment, learning budgeting and money management skills; addressing healthy boundaries and communication; practicing problem solving techniques; exploring healthy lifestyle and leisure pursuits, and learning stress reduction strategies.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

- Complete individual intake assessments to determine program suitability and appropriate community-based sanctions and/or referrals
- Assist in referring clients to internal JHSYR programs by completing program specific intakes and connecting clients to appropriate staff member for referral process
- Communicate with clients regarding program requirements, program dates, various court dates,
- Liaise with Crown Attorneys, Duty Counsel, court staff, interpreters, community partners, private counsel, support workers, etc. to advocate for clients and agency
- Schedule clients for DAP/APD/CSI programming sessions
- Collect and process program fees, donations, and restitution payments
- Communicate and work with victims to assess restitution amounts and coordinate restitution payments
- Assist in arranging community service, and/or identify and provide referrals to local culturally appropriate agencies, programs, support services
- Assist with system navigation of government and community programs
- Connect directly with clients to provide immediate support and counselling sessions
- Complete individualized goal planning exercises and various learning activities with clients.
- Exercise a flexible, non-judgmental, anti-racist and anti-oppressive approach to people and work
- Support and record the progress of each client and prepare reports for court accordingly
- Create, maintain, and organize client files
- Complete required program reports, data collection, statistical data and monthly financial ledgers.
- Maintain and respect professional boundaries with clients and coworkers
- Adhere to agency and Ministry of the Attorney General program policies and procedures
- Regularly attend all-staff and team meetings
- Complete training as directed by Program Coordinator and agency
- Engage in continuous learning as directed by the Program Coordinator
- Travel to Newmarket courthouse, Bradford courthouse and all other JHSYR offices when required

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Combination of post-secondary degree, diploma and/or certificate and practical experience in a relevant Human Services and/or Social Services field
- Experience delivering counselling to diverse populations is an asset
- Ability to work within diverse populations and communities with an awareness of socioeconomic/language barrier and criminogenic risk factors
- Experience working with criminal justice involved individuals and diverse communities with an understanding of the barriers and factors leading to criminal justice involvement, socioeconomic barriers and language barriers
- Lived experience of involvement with the criminal justice system is an asset
- Ability to speak multiple languages is an asset
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to actively listen and provide an empathetic approach to client interaction
- Ability to maintain relationships with community agencies and stakeholders
- Strong ability to advocate for clients by upholding and representing JHSYR's mission, principles and core values
- Professional demeanor with strong rapport and relationship building skills
- Familiar with various community organizations and resources in York Region and South Simcoe, with the ability to seek out resources beyond these areas
- Strong sense of team cohesion and collaboration, with the ability to work independently
- Highly organized with keen attention to detail and strong prioritization and multi-tasking skills
- Ability to work professionally under pressure and manage daily tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Strong administrative and organizational skills and abilities
- Knowledge of crisis intervention, de-escalation techniques and harm reduction approaches
