The Public and Rural Health Division works in collaboration with Alberta Health Services, public health officials provincially and across the country, as well as other partners, to provide strategic direction and leadership through the assessment, development and implementation of provincial policies, regulations, strategies and standards related to communicable diseases, immunization, environmental public health, chronic disease and injury prevention, health promotion, wellness, emergency preparedness, response and recovery and Indigenous health policy. The division carries out these functions to support innovation and engagement with Albertans in wellness, health promotion and injury as well as disease prevention.

The Health Protection Branch oversees, leads and supports the development, implementation and review of legislation, standards, guidelines and policies to protect public health. Health Protection staff follow current issues/trends and support research into emerging and existing environmental and infection control and infectious disease public health concerns (e.g., climate change, air borne contaminants, hospital and community acquired infections) to understand these issues and the impacts they may have for public health. The Branch also coordinates the emergency planning and response efforts of the health sector for the department for emergency events (e.g., pandemic influenza, business disruptions and flood).

The Protection for Persons in Care (PPC) Unit investigates reports of abuse in publicly funded facilities and administers the _Protection for Persons in Care Act_. This Act promotes the safety and well-being of adult Albertans who receive care or support services from publicly funded service providers.

**Role Responsibilities**:
The Education and Outreach Specialist serves a vital role within the Protection for Persons in Care (PPC) Unit and is responsible for leading the development as well as implementation of internal and external training strategies. Reporting to the Strategic Policy Manager, the Education and Outreach Specialist will be responsible for developing an education and outreach program for a diverse group of stakeholders, which provides guidance on what constitutes abuse and neglect, good practices of care and the requirement to report when abuse or neglect is witnessed or suspected. The position will also coordinate training activities to ensure staff have the appropriate guidance, tools and training they need to effectively and efficiently carry out their job duties. Teaching adults will be an essential component of this role and will support success in a prevention of abuse strategy.

The specialist operates with a commitment to ongoing improvement, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
- The responsibilities for this role are:
- Designing and delivering outreach programs including educational workshops and presentations throughout Alberta to service providers, educators, stakeholder and interest groups
- Developing and implementing internal and external training strategies, materials, plans and courses, ensuring alignment with business objectives, relevant legislation, policies, guidelines and strategies
- Overseeing the creation and implementation of internal and external communication plans as well as materials
- Coordinating the annual plan for education programs that reflect available budget and workforce resources as well as business objectives
- Developing and implementing of quantitative and qualitative approaches to evaluate the effectiveness of programs
- Analyzing programs against requests from various audiences to identify opportunities for enhancement and alignment with PPC priorities
- Analyzing information to ensure education and training materials are current and align with existing policy and legislation
