The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada, a national union representing some 70,000 professionals and scientists throughout Canada, requires a **Communications Team Lead** for a 12 month term for its National Office.

Under the direction of the Director, Policy and Communications, the Communications Team Lead develops and implements communications plans in support of Institute strategic objectives, leads the day-to-day operations of the Communications team, provides communications expertise in collaboration with other sections of the Institute, identifies new technologies and platforms to engage and communicate with target audiences and ensures quality and relevance of the PIPSC brand.

**What can I expect to do in this role?**

Major responsibilities include:

- Supporting the Director in transitioning to a digital-first communication team.
- Assigning and distributing assignments to communications staff and providing functional guidance through coaching and direction.
- Monitoring complex files and ensuring consistency in approach on communications initiatives. Establishing priorities and deadlines and ensuring efficient and timely service and quality control.
- Recommending leave and overtime requests.
- Providing input on career development plans, capacity development, training and work plans and assisting the Director in monitoring progress.
- Leading staff orientation for communications team.
- Producing reports on workload and productivity. Proposing and implementing operational changes as required to keep aligned with industry standards.
- Developing operational plans to meet the Institute's strategic needs with respect to communications initiatives. Providing input and advice on budgetary priorities and resource allocation.
- Maintaining, implementing, and participating in the development of communications plans and strategies. Providing recommendations on methods and approaches to improve communications initiatives and responding to issues in a timely fashion.
- Researching and analyzing issues, recommending, planning, and implementing communications activities and relevant campaigns. Providing communication expertise and support for projects undertaken by the Institute and/or its constituent bodies.
- Creating communications content to be used in various Institute communication vehicles.
- Monitoring the political landscape and emerging situations. Recommending and implementing approved media and government relations strategies and campaigns.
- Providing expertise and ideas to developing and implementing creative media communications events and activities.
- Ensuring accuracy, consistency, and quality of Institute messages.
- Building and maintaining a network of contacts with government, media, other associations and groups and responding to requests for information from internal and external clients.
- Participating in multi-disciplinary teams assigned to special projects and working collaboratively with employees in other sections.

**How do I qualify?**
- Completion of a university degree in Journalism, Political Science, Public Relations, or Communications.
- Three (3) to five (5) years of progressive and related experience in the planning and implementation of communications’ plans and strategies, writing and editing of a variety of documents and preparing special events and activities, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

**Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities**:

- Exceptional communications skills and leadership experience in communications planning, branding strategies, media outreach, marketing principles, political organizing, design principles, digital technologies, and creative processes
- Demonstrated coaching skills, ability to assign work, provide functional guidance and direction, establish priorities and deadlines, and ensure efficient and timely service and quality control
- Knowledge of communications and public relations principles, methods, and techniques - eagerness to explore best practices and new technologies to increase PIPSC’s communications reach
- Ability to create and maintain team dynamics and performance
- Ability to work effectively under mínimal supervision within an environment of constant change and tight deadlines including the ability to triage and respond to issues in a timely fashion.
